2. Teddy’s 2 nd nightmare sequence (nightmares within nightmares)

3. A flash of lightning begins the nightmare sequence. Similar to the other nightmare but this time Teddy is lying on his back facing the camera as opposed to being on his side as he was in the first nightmare scene.

4. Suspenseful piano music and Teddy walks out of the fog into his dream.

5. Suspenseful piano music and muffled sounds of german voices and laughter. The dead are speaking which foreshadows what is going to happen.

6. Showing his disturbed mind as ‘Rachel Solando’ appears as the dead mother.

7. Drum beats sound as the dead girl opens her eyes.

8. Blonde hair reminiscent of Dolores’ head. The snow falling like ash. Is this the back of the little girl’s head? Another perspective of the scene to create confusion and hence tension for the audience. Classic horror to have the dead body come to life. Her voice is a whisper on the sound track and not direct sound which adds to the mystery of the scene.

9. Mahler’s music begins on the sound track.

10. A low camera angle as the dream changes scene. Mahler’s music adds drama to the sequence. There is also a sound bite added here of Children laughing and what sounds like human voices in reverse. Scorsese is playing with sound forwards and backwards to create surrealism and tension.
