1 Accessibility Resources Notetaking: Who Gets It and Why? University at Buffalo 25 Capen Hall Buffalo, NY 14260 (716)-645-2608www.buffalo.edu/accessibility

2 What is Notetaking? Accessibility Resources uses a volunteer peer note-taking system to provide copies of class notes to students with disabilities. This means that the notes are taken by another student in the same classroom. Accessibility Resources will assist in coordinating the use of notetakers, but the faculty members in the classes in which notes are needed are usually the primary recruiters of volunteer note-takers. This should be an anonymous process unless otherwise requested by the student receiving notes.

3 Who receives Notes? Students go through a process to become eligible for services at Accessibility Resources. Taking notes may be difficult for students who:  Are Deaf or hard of hearing  Are blind or low vision  Have a learning disability  Have a mobility impairment  Have Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)  Have any disability that negatively impacts listening, writing, reading, or any other skills needed to take effective notes

4 If a peer notetaker cannot be found, or the student is looking for more independence, a LiveScribe Pen will be offered. This allows students to audio record lectures and take notes simultaneously. For more information on this technology, visit: http://www.livescribe.com/en-us/
