Classical Conditioning

I. Pavlov Most famous example of classical conditioning Salivating dog What happened? When a stimulus that does not initially elicit salivation is paired with a stimulus that does, eventually the unconnected stimulus also elicits the salivation

II. Stimuli & Responses Unconditioned Stimulus (UCS) –Stimulus originally able to elicit the response –Pavlov? Unconditioned Response (UCR) –Response elicited by the unconditioned stimulus –Pavlov?

II. Stimuli & Responses cont. Conditioned Stimulus (CS) –Stimulus that does not originally elicit the response but which through conditioning becomes able to elicit the response –Pavlov? Conditioned Response (CR) –Response elicited by the conditioned stimulus –Pavlov?

III. Application to Human Behavior Classical conditioning is the process by which we develop many of our emotional responses. How –Physiological responses such as heart rate become linked to various stimuli. –Those responses then provide the basis for our emotions –Examples

Extinction Classically conditioned responses can last for years However, they can be eliminated if the conditioned stimulus is consistently presented without being paired with the unconditioned stimulus. When the bell was rung for Pavlov’s dogs without any meat powder given the dogs salivated less until they finally stopped.
