Understanding AzMERIT Results and Score Reporting An Overview

AzMERIT is based on Arizona State Board of Education Adopted Key Values Key Values related to results and reporting Summative and end-of-course assessments Measure college and career readiness Allow for meaningful comparisons Valid and reliable data Accurate perspective of learning Communicated clearly

Summative and end-of-course assessments Summative for Grades 3 through 8 End-of-Course for high school ELA and math courses Snapshot of student performance Administered near the end of the school year or near the end of the course Relatively short assessments

Measure college and career readiness Proficiency cut scores for ELA 11 and Algebra II at least as rigorous as ACT College Readiness Benchmarks Proficiency cut scores for Grades 3-8 and other EOC tests articulated so that proficient students are on a trajectory towards Proficiency on ELA 11 and Algebra II Connection between “Readiness” and proficiency

Allow for meaningful comparisons No more “truth gap” for Arizona’s statewide achievement assessment Proficiency on AzMERIT is similar to proficiency on NAEP and Smarter Balanced assessments

Valid and reliable data Accurate perspective of learning Results are focused on student proficiency and readiness Results are limited due to shortness of assessments Overall results Scoring Category results

Valid and reliable data Accurate perspective of learning Results provide some insight into students’ strengths and weaknesses Test score interpretation that are not supported by evidence are not provided No raw scores No percent correct

Communicated clearly All results are related to proficiency Overall proficiency in the content area Proficiency/mastery in the scoring categories Color coded results to guide interpretation Green, aqua, blue for proficient Red, orange, yellow for not proficient Report design informed by research

AzMERIT Snapshot of student performance Higher proficiency expectations Tied to college and career readiness Similar to expectation on other assessments Results are focused on student proficiency Report design informed by research

Understanding AzMERIT Results and Score Reporting Raised Expectations for AzMERIT

NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress) National assessment of academic content Administered every two years in reading and mathematics Administered to a sample of students in selected grades State level results Results can be compared across years
