Apothecary Jake Eric Jacob

Introduction Our job is apothecary. An apothecary is someone who makes and can prescribe medicines. They also perform operations and help cure people.

Daily Life Our daily life would be mainly selling medicines and to prescribe medicines. We would also perform procedures to help cure people. We would also need to find plants to make medicines.

Difficulties We Faced People depended on us to help cure them. We also had to perform operations. Making medicines was also difficult.

Tools We Needed We needed tools to make medicines. We needed our mortar (bowl) and pestle (short stick) to mix up our medicines. We also used knives, herbs, tongue scrapers, tooth extractors, adhesive plasters, and bandages. Today our medicines comes in small packages and bottles.

Our Shop Our shop would be located on Main Street. We would also live in our shop. The front is where the patients are cured and operated on. There would also be a spot where we would make and prescribe medicines. The back is where we lived.

What We Used to Cure People We used many different things to cure people. We used chalk for heartburn, calamine for skin irritations, and cinchona bark for fevers. Those are the main things we use for curing people. Today we use pills and liquid medicine for fevers.

Items We Sold We sold items so we could make extra money. We sold cooking spices, candles, salad oil, anchovies, toothbrushes, and tobacco.

Skills We Needed We needed to know math and science. Math for counting how much money we receive and for mixing medicines. Science for knowing the human body for operations.

Studying We need to study apothecary for 3-6 years and we also needed a college degree. Now a days you study regular courses for 12 years and then for 4 years you go to college to study to be a doctor.

Conclusion Basically our job is a very important part in our community. If it weren’t for us diseases would be spreading through our town like crazy. In Jamestown the apothecary had not yet been invented. So diseases spread through the town. Now a days we call apothecary either a pharmacist or doctor.
