Is a way to understand decision making on effort at work, based on Connection of effort and performance. (E P) Connection of performance and rewards. (P R) Connection reward to the individual needs /desire. Strength of the individual’s drive to satisfy need /desire. Connections are scored and referred to as valency High score means high motivation Low score means low motivation

Rewards may be intrinsic (internal) Praise / good feedback / recognition / privacy or extrinsic (external) Money / promotion / prizes / publicity For high motivation the employee must have high scores on each factor (effort / performance / reward)
