2 The 6 nutrients and their functions in the body 1. Protein - which is needed for growth and repair and energy 2. Carbohydrate – whose function is for energy 3. Fat – whose function is for energy 4. Vitamins – function to regulate body’s work 5. Minerals - also function to regulate body’s work 6. Water – also functions to regulate body’s work

3 The Food Pyramid 6 Food Groups 1. Bread/ cereal – bread, noodles, cereal, pasta you need 6-11 servings 2. Fruit group – all fruits ( banana, cherry, oranges, etc) you need 2-4 servings

4 3. Vegetable group – carrots, cabbage, corn, tomatoes, all vegetables ) you need 3- 5 servings 4. Milk group – milk, yogurt, pudding, cheese. You need 2-3 servings

5 5. Meat/Protein group – beef, pork, chicken, fish, peanuts, peanut butter, eggs. You need 2-3 servings 6. Fats/Others group – butter, salad dressing, vegetable oil, candy, chips. You need very little of this group.

6 DEFINITION OF TERMS DIET – All the foods you eat NUTRIENTS – substances in food that help you grow NUTRITION – the way your body uses nutrients HUNGER - PHYSICAL NEED TO EAT

7 APPETITE – the mental desire to eat CALORIE – unit used to measure energy EMPTY CALORIE FOOD – high in calories low in nutrients NUTRIENT DENSE FOOD- high in nutrients low in calories DEFICIENCY - not having something that is needed or necessary.
