Deuteronomy The Second Giving of the Law © John Stevenson, 2008
3
Deuteronomy 4:1-2 Now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the judgments which I am teaching you to perform, so that you may live and go in and take possession of the land which the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you. 2 You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.
4
The Chosen People What is the relationship between God’s election of Israel and Israel’s responsibility? Why did God choose Israel?
5
Deuteronomy 7:7-8 The LORD did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any of the peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples, 8 but because the LORD loved you and kept the oath which He swore to your forefathers, the LORD brought you out by a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
6
Deuteronomy 9:5 It is not for your righteousness or for the uprightness of your heart that you are going to possess their land, but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the LORD your God is driving them out before you, in order to confirm the oath which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
7
The Chosen People What was to be Israel’s attitude toward the other nations?
8
The Chosen People How does this relate to Jewish- Christian relations? How does this relate to Jewish- Muslim relations? How does this relate to today’s Middle East Problem?
9
Deuteronomy 9-10 You are required to keep them (10:10-13) God rewrote the tablets of the covenant (10:4) I mediated with the Lord for His mercy on your behalf (9:26) I broke the tablets in My anger (9:17) Remember how you provoked the Lord in the wilderness (9:7) God is not giving you the land because of your righteousness
10
Law of the Tithe 14:22 14:28 Every Year Every 3 rd Year Remission of Debts 14:28Every 7 th Year “However, there shall be no poor among you, since the Lord will surely bless you in the land which the lord your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, 5 if only you listen obediently to the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all this commandment which I am commanding you today.” (Deuteronomy 15:4-5).
11
Deuteronomy 30:11-13 For this commandment which I command you today is not too difficult for you, nor is it out of reach. 12 It is not in heaven, that you should say, 'Who will go up to heaven for us to get it for us and make us hear it, that we may observe it?' 13 Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, 'Who will cross the sea for us to get it for us and make us hear it, that we may observe it?'
12
Deuteronomy 30:14 But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may observe it.
13
Deuteronomy 30:19-20 I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants, 20 by loving the LORD your God, by obeying His voice, and by holding fast to Him; for this is your life and the length of your days, that you may live in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them.
14
Deuteronomy 18:15-16 The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your countrymen, you shall listen to him. 16 This is according to all that you asked of the LORD your God in Horeb on the day of the assembly, saying, “Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, let me not see this great fire anymore, or I will die.”
15
Deuteronomy 18:18-19 I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. 19 It shall come about that whoever will not listen to My words which he shall speak in My name, I Myself will require it of him.
16
Deuteronomy 34:10-12 Since that time no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face, 11 for all the signs and wonders which the LORD sent him to perform in the land of Egypt against Pharaoh, all his servants, and all his land, 12 and for all the mighty power and for all the great terror which Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.
