3 North Carolina  North Carolina is the FIRST of the 13 colonies  It is known as the “Tar Heel State” and “First in Flight”  The Capital of North Carolina is Raleigh  North Carolina is the FIRST of the 13 colonies  It is known as the “Tar Heel State” and “First in Flight”  The Capital of North Carolina is Raleigh

4 Location North Carolina’s Borders are: Virginia to the north Tennessee to the west South Carolina to the south Georgia to the southwest, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east.

5 Regions There are 4 regions in NC. The Tidewater Region (Outer Coastal Plains) known for water, water, water EVERYWHERE, borders the Atlantic Ocean and the Coastal Plains The Coastal Plains Region (Inner Coastal Region) known for its fertile grassy FLAT land, borders the Tidewater and Piedmont Regions The Piedmont Region known for the hilly, rolling land and sandy soil borders the Coastal Plain and the Mountain Region The Mountain Region, some of largest mountains in the eastern United States, stretch from Piedmont Region to Tennessee

6 NC Economy North Carolina has a strong economy in farming tobacco and poultry. It also produces a lot of textiles and furniture.

7 North Carolina Climate  The mountains often act as a "shield", blocking low temperatures and storms from entering North Carolina.  Most of the state has a humid climate except in the higher in the Appalachians which have a subtropical highland climate.  For most areas in the state, the temperatures in July during the daytime are around 90 °. 16 Tidewater Cities Cities in the Tidewater region include: Elizabeth City, Edenton, Washington, New Bern, Beaufort, Wilmington, and South Port.

17 Tidewater Economy/Entertainment Entertainment: Survive off of Tourism (Beaches, Restaurant, Hotels and Vacation) Beaches Economy: Families made their way of living through fishing or fishing trade Known for growing rice Area known for producing phosphates used to make fertilizer

18 NC Problems: Due to NC lack of navigable ports it made it impossible to set up a port city and hard for NC to take off as a colony. Today NC ports are still un- navigable. Other than Wilmington and Morehead City. In order to help this problem, NC has built inland ports in Charlotte and Greensboro.

27 Problems in North Carolina One of the problems NC has faced in its economy is the closing of textile factories. These factories have went overseas and to other towns with higher educational standards To combat this problem, North Carolina has tried to make education a larger priority and to better educate citizens.

33 Economy Economy: This area is known for Furniture making Area for BANKING and technology new businesses and infrastructure Entertainment: The Piedmont area is home to Nascar and racing. It is also the place where most arenas and sports facilities, such as Bank of America Stadium and the Time Warner Arena

34 NC Problems Infrastructure: NC is behind in roads, transportation and bridges, well as ways to create energy. To fix this problem we are putting a lot of money into rebuilding and researching new ways to create energy: solar, wind, clean coal etc.

39 Economy The Mountain Region makes money from Pine Trees (Christmas Trees), tourism and its casino Entertainment: The mountain region has many resorts and places for recreation. The region also is known for the Cherokee Indian Reservations, where there are casinos.

40 NC Problems New settlers in the Mountains found it difficult to travel the steep, rough, and muddy roads back and forth to their county in Rutherford, Burke, and Wilkes Counties. They had to go to these counties to pay taxes, buy or sell land, go to court, or carry on other business. The settlers began to ask the legislature to establish new counties so they would not have to travel so far established Buncombe and Ashe Counties. They also built and constructed new roads and bridges to navigate the mountains overtime
