Utilizing SAS to Create Diagnostic Reading Assessments Evelyn Wassel, Ed.D. Tri-Valley School District October 11, 2010

What is SAS? The Pennsylvania Standards Aligned System (SAS) is a collaborative product of research and good practice that identifies six distinct elements which, if utilized together, will provide schools and districts a common framework for continuous school and district enhancement and improvement.

Diagnostic Assessments Ascertains, prior to instruction, each student’s –Strengths –Weaknesses –Knowledge –Skills –Establishing these permits the instructor to remediate students adjust the curriculum to meet pupils’ unique needs.

DRAs Developmental Reading Assessment. Teachers in grades K-2 assess students using a DRA several times during the course of the school year. A DRA consists of a child reading an unseen text on his/her independent reading level.

Running Records Running records are similar to DRAs and are given on a formative basis to inform instruction. Running records may be on a seen or unseen text.

DRA & Running Records The DRA and running record assess for: –oral reading (ability to call the words on the page) –fluency (speed & expression or intonation) –retelling/comprehension (ability to share or retell the story to a friend who has never seen/heard/read the text).

GRADE Group Reading Assessment and Diagnostic Evaluation diagnostic reading test that determines what developmental skills students Pre-K through 12th grade have mastered and where they need instruction or intervention. helps educators with the recommended instruction through correlated follow-up materials. group-administered norm-referenced

GMADE Group Math Assessment and Diagnostic Evaluation

Classroom Diagnostic Tools Set of online tests designed to provide diagnostic information in order to guide instruction and remediation. Will be offered in grades 6 through high school and will be available for use in schools and classrooms throughout the school year. Based on content covered by the Keystone Exams and the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment and includes an interactive and dynamic reporting suite. Will be fully integrated in the Standards Aligned System (SAS).

R4.A.1.1.1: Identify and/or interpret meaning of multiple-meaning words used in text. –7 results R4.A.1.1.2: Identify and/or interpret a synonym or antonym of a word used in text. –Same 7 results

Designing Assessments in SAS If you find students are deficient in these areas you can go to the “Materials and Resources” button on the previous page –Clear Standards 4 th Grade RWSL –R4.A.1.1.1: Identify and/or interpret meaning of multiple-meaning words used in text. 14 resources available Varying levels based on student needs

Creating an Assessment Select test items to add to your cart which is a holding area for test items. These items will be added to your Cart, and the item’s text will disappear. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Build Assessment button.

Creating an Assessment Note: Clicking on View Cart or Build Assessment will generate a list of test items that are in your cart. The test items will appear in whatever order they were selected in the steps above.

Creating an Assessment At times the order of the test items may be inconvenient: –Longer, more involved Constructed Response items m –Multiple Choice items may appear at the end You can create several versions of the same assessment, reordering the questions on each.

Creating an Assessment Re-ordering the items on the assessment by clicking on the Move up/Move down button –Next to the test items –Items will move up or down the list one space with each click. You can delete an item by clicking the Delete button.

Creating an Assessment Click on View Cart or Build Assessment to see all items on the test. Click on Teacher Version or Answer Key tabs to see different versions.

Creating an Assessment The Student Version contains test items only. The Teacher Version contains the test items, along with the answer key and scoring rubrics. The Answer Key does not contain test items, only the answer key and scoring rubrics.

Creating an Assessment Select the Student Version and select the ePortfolio option for saving the assessment in the Portfolio Manager icon –Small briefcase –Upper right hand of page Will save a pdf of all three versions in your portfolio

Creating an Assessment Other Options: –Print – print the assessment without saving it. –Word – save the assessment as a Microsoft Word document You can add additional questions of your own –pdf – saves the assessment as a pdf file Note: If you choose any of these options you may have to save twice – once for student and once for teacher/answer key version.

My ePortfolio Renaming items –Click on the pencil on the right to change the name and file it. –Rename something you will remember. –Place it in the proper folder for organization. Click Save. Items will be moved to the folder and out of the main screen area.

Your Assignment Choose an area of focus to create a diagnostic test for students in your grade level. Work in teams to create one assessment. If time remains, search SAS for resources to enhance instruction for students who do not meet grade level standards for each area.
