1
Dynamic vs. Static Characters static: a character whose intentions/characteristics/personality remain the same throughout the course of the story Example: Homer Simpson -after 20 seasons of The Simpsons, is still lazy, gluttonous (obsessed with donuts), and unsophisticated.
2
dynamic: a character whose attitudes/ personality/situation changes or becomes increasingly more complex as the story evolves Example: Neo from The Matrix -begins as a common worker, ignorant of his surroundings -becomes increasingly heroic and courageous -eventually leads a rebellion against the computer controlling his world
3
“living in the gray”: a character or situation that is ambiguous and cannot be easily described/categorized as “good”, “bad”, “yes”, “no” etc. Requires complex analysis to fully understand all the dynamics at play. Example: the ending of Inception -whenever Leonardo Dicaprio spins a top and it keeps spinning, he knows he is in a dream -Last scene: the camera cuts out before we can see if the top stops spinning or not -Is he in a dream?
