Ch. 3 Lesson 2 What is the respiratory system?
3
respiratory system: Carries gases between outside air & blood Many parts coated w/ mucus= sticky, thick fluid that traps dust, germs & other things in air
4
trachea tube that carries air from larynx lungs leads to 2 branches (bronchi) goes in lungs
5
bronchioles small tubes in lungs
6
larynx vocal cords stretch across larynx voice= vocal cords vibrate
7
air sacs (alveoli) thin walled pouches in lungs oxygen enters blood & carbon dioxide leaves thru. capillaries capillary
8
diaphragm dome shaped muscle that forms bottom of chest inhale (breathe in)- moves exhale (breathe out)- moves
9
cilia Tiny, hairlike structures on cells in linings of many parts of respiratory system
10
Scanning electron microscope image of lung cilia
11
nose mouth larynx pharynx trachea lungs bronchi bronchioles alveoli (air sacs) diaphragm
12
When you hold your breath, carbon dioxide builds in your blood. Your brain senses this & sends a message to the diaphragm and rib muscles telling them to breathe.
