The Design Brief Needs, Considerations

The role of the Design Brief: Today’s lesson What is a design brief How is it used in a design process What are the needs and considerations: case study questions and examples Design Decisions

QUICK WRITE: A4 lined paper: Title: Basic Design Brief List in dot-point form what types of things are involved in a design brief from your own prior knowledge Eg. Budget, Context...

The Design Brief: Notes Definition: Written or verbal instruction to a designer outlining a design task. It features information including the client need, design constraints, audience, purpose and context. More info. Pages 173 – 180 Notetaking today: Definitions for Design Brief, Needs, Considerations Why is the brief important? How is a brief used in a design process?

How is a design brief used? Think, Pair, Share: Why is a design brief important? How would a designer use a design brief in a design process?

The Design Brief Needs, Considerations

DO NOW – Glossary: Needs and Constraints Needs = requirements Needs are the things that are required in a design – what the product needs to do (purpose), what needs to be included etc. Constraints = limitations or boundries A client may have financial restrictions or production facilities may be limited. Constraints may include cost, time, location, restrictions in colour and so on.

‘Fillico Beverly Hills’ is a premium line of sping water from a company named Vieluce in Osaka, Japan. Only 5,000 bottles are sold each month and they can be purchased for around $100 per 750ml bottle.

Drink Bottle: Needs and Constraints What may have been required in the design of the drink bottle? What may it have had to do? Function? What may it have had to look like? Appeal to? Include? What may have some of the constraints have been? Basic cost? Materials? What other things can you think of?

Today’s task Choose three different case studies from the Textbook (not including Stephen Banham, Letterbox) For each, write a list of the needs of the design and a list of the constraints or limitations. You may need to add your own – not every case study will have it included in the write-up for you!

Homework: Download from shared drive: Textbook_designer_choice_casestudy Visual Communication Design Folder, Year 12 folder Design Industry Practice Under Week 2, Monday lesson folder OR.... From my USB or printed copy! Fill in the chart using one case study Due Tomorrow!
