HAVING POSITIVE EMOTIONAL/ EMOTIONAL HEALTH… Means you can manage your emotions in a healthy way & deal with the demands & challenges in your life You can accept yourself & others Feel comfortable spending time alone & with others Able to cope with feelings, emotions, and situations in a positive manner Your emotional/ mental health also affects your social health & physical health… how could your emotional health positively or negatively affect your social or physical health?

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE GOOD MENTAL & EMOTIONAL HEALTH? (TURN TO PAGE 1 OF GREEN PACKET) Sense of belonging: feel close to family members, friends, and other peers Sense of purpose: feel that you have value & a sense of importance in your life Positive outlook: finding positives in situations, rather than harping on the negative aspects of life Self – sufficiency: confidence in yourself to make responsible & safe decisions Healthy self – esteem: you are able to accept & recover from challenges & failures Resilient: you are able to recover from difficulty & crisis, without letting it stop you from reaching your goals

SELF – ESTEEM… HOW MUCH YOU VALUE, RESPECT, & FEEL CONFIDENT ABOUT YOURSELF Having positive self – esteem can help you to make positive life choices, which directly affects your health. Positive self – esteem can increase your competence, or having enough skills to complete something. How can negative self – esteem negatively affect your health???? DEVELOPING SELF – ESTEEM… Developing self – esteem happens over time from accomplishing new challenges and from praise and acceptance from friends and family. Learning to adapt your strengths and weaknesses when trying to achieve a goal is beneficial. Not everyone succeeds on the first try to accomplish something new. Self – talk can increase or decrease your self – esteem by simply praising yourself for a job well done or for hounding yourself for a minor failure.

WAYS TO INCREASE YOUR SELF – ESTEEM (PAGE 1 OF GREEN PACKET) Choose friends who value & respect you Focus on your positive features Use encouraging self – talk Do not expect perfection. Accept your mistakes & think of them as learning experiences. Try new activities to discover your talents. Write down your goals & steps to how you will achieve them Exercise regularly to feel more energized Volunteer your time to help someone Work at accepting the things you cannot change & focus your energy on changing the things you can

Esteem Needs / Feeling Recognized Esteem Needs / Feeling Recognized Self – esteem, personal worth, recognition/ accomplishments Self-actualizing Needs Self-actualizing Needs More concerned with personal growth rather than other’s opinions. Reaching personal potential.
