Thomas Corman Thomas Coram was born 1668 in Lyme, Regis, Dorset, UK. He was a philanthropist who created the London Foundling Hospital to look after unwanted children in Lamb’s conduit fields, Bloomsbury. The reason he thought about making the foundling hospital was when he saw a scale of abandoned children found on the streets of London on October 17,1733.The Foundling Hospital was completed around the mid- 1740s and is known to be the world’s first incorporated charity. Thomas Coram died on March 29, 1751.

Clara Barton Clara Barton was born on December 25, 1812 in Oxford, Massachusetts. She had a couple of different jobs before she became a red cross such as being a teacher and working in the U.S patent office. Clara Barton spent her life serving other and created and organization called American Red Cross that still helps people in need today. She died on April 12, 1912.

Florence Nightingale Florence Nightingale was born on May 12, 1820 in Florence, Italy. She was an English nurse, writer and a statistician. She helped in the Crimea war in 1853 where she helped the wounded soldiers. She helped clean and organize the hospital and many soldiers thought of her as a great lady. She set up a training school for nurses at St. Thomas Hospital. She died in London on August 13,1990.

Walter Reed Walter Reed was born on September 13,1851 in Belroi, Virginia. He received an M.D from the university of Virginia in 1869 at age 17. He remains to be the youngest graduate in the history of the university’s of medical school. Walter Reed was best known for his research demonstrating that the mosquito is responsible for transmitting yellow fever from infected humans to uninfected humans. He died on November 22, 1902 by appendicitis.
