Introduction It is very important to clarify the definition of the Internet of things (IoT). In order to clarify its definition, the following issues should be studied: The features of the IoT The relations between the IoT and the existing networks the existing networks, such as, Internet, NGN, Sensor Network, etc, The considerations of extension to the existing networks the extensions for support of the IoT

The Features of the IoT (1) 3 The IoT has the following features that are different from the existing networks Sensing, the IoT can sense the location and other status of the things. Actuating, the IoT can actuate the controller of things to sense and control the things. Data stream inputting, the sensed data will be inputted into the IoT continuously. The accumulated data stream will be in the large volume, which will challenge the storage and process capabilities of the network.

The Features of the IoT (2) Timely data exchanging, some sensed data and actuated data should be inputted from and outputted to the things in timing. The existing network may not provide the service of data transmission with timing. Especially, the IP can not provide the timely data transmission. The mixture of data transferring and data processing, the data in the IoT should converge when it is transmitted. This will require the cross layer services which may be difficult to be provided by the existing network.

The Features of the IoT (3) The mixture of data provision and data usage, some nodes of the IoT should both provide the sensed data to the IoT and use the actuated data from the IoT for further actions. It may require the whole IoT to be formed into Peer-to-Peer model. It does not like the P2P network, which take the P2P model just within the some application domain. Data source authentication, the security considerations of the IoT will require the authentication of data source. It should provide the services of looking for the source of data and authenticate it.

The Features of the IoT (4) Data privacy protection The sensed data of the IoT may contain the private information. The IoT should provide the privacy protection during transmitting, converging, storing, mining and processing the data. Privacy protection will not obstruct the data source authentication.

The Relations with the existing networks Based on the existing networks The IoT should based on the existing network technology to provide the services of data transmission, network interconnection, data transportation, data storage and applications. Extending the existing networks The existing networks (only refer to the wide area networks) can not support the services of sensing, actuating, timely data exchanging and data source authentication. The extension of the existing networks is need for support of the IoT.

The Considerations of Extensions to the NGN 8 The NGN provide the more extendable framework, it is easy to extend the NGN for support of the IoT. The Internet has many problems (Security, QoS, etc). The architecture of Internet should be changed in the future. To add the device layer in NGN? Or extend the sensing and actuating component in the transport layer of NGN? The sensing and actuating devices concern with different application domain. In the view of ITU- T, the standardization works should focus on the common networking aspects of the sensing and actuating devices. To add the application layer in NGN? Or extend the IoT-specific components in the service layer of the NGN? In the view of ITU-T, the standardization works should focus on the common interoperating services of the IoT applications.
