 A review environment that encourages every ministry group to engage in strategic thinking, set and achieve ministry goals and outcomes.  When completed, the review process will provide local leadership with specific goals and actions for each ministry program.  Corps leadership can identify areas of success to celebrate and areas of weakness which need further support and attention.

CREATIVE PLANNING & DISCUSSION Discussions will help ministry groups understand how the Territorial Priorities are realized through local ministry and mission.

MINISTRY FOCUS QUESTIONS These questions are for corps leadership to discuss and identify strengths of the ministry unit and areas that require attention. These are key overarching aspects such as Vision Administration Pastoral Care Leadership Development Congregational Health Soldiership & Enrolment Social Media / Web Spiritual Health Evangelism Integrated Mission Candidate Development Multicultural & Aboriginal Ministries Stewardship of Finance Stewardship of People Women’s Ministries Community & Family Services Music and Gospel Arts

STRATEGIC THINKING The Strategic Thinking worksheets are designed to be copied and distributed to the leaders/committees responsible for each ministry area. Each ministry activity is encouraged to set goals and identify the actions required to achieve their goals. Worksheets are NOT to be submitted with the review documents. Ministry group discussion starters are included in the ‘Strategic Thinking Manual and Question Guidelines’ to help groups focus on evangelism, discipleship, outreach, education, service, and leadership outcomes during the goal setting process. This document is found in the Supporting Documents.zip file on SAMIS.

PROGRAM SUMMARY & GOALS Using the Strategic Thinking worksheets from ministry groups, goals should be transferred to these charts. It is not necessary to include all the goals from every group - only the HIGH PRIORITY goals. The PROGRAM SUMMARY & GOALS charts are to be submitted with the review documents and will also provide discussion points during the DHQ visit and in Corps Council/Mission Board discussion throughout the year. The leadership team will now have a valuable understanding of the ministry focus for each group. These goals and actions can be assessed and evaluated regularly throughout the year, and used as encouragement and motivation for ministry.

Where is the Triennial Review? There is no longer an extended Triennial Review. The new Annual Corps Membership Review & Strategic Plan is for all ministry units. What if my groups already have set goals? Existing goals and actions may be recorded on the PROGRAM SUMMARY AND GOALS charts. Review, follow-up and Strategic Thinking should continue throughout the year to achieve goals. There is no place in SAMIS to collect statistics for some of our ministries. Not every ministry program will be found in SAMIS by name, but most ministries do fit into a program activity that is already in SAMIS. If you cannot decide where to count statistics for a particular program, complete the form found under ACTION -> REQUEST A NEW ACTIVITY in SAMIS and you will receive a response indicating how to collect statistics for the particular ministry. Ministries that are not entered will not be accounted for on the Growth History Report. I’m experiencing problems entering statistic/roll numbers in SAMIS. If you are experiencing technical issues with SAMIS contact the HELPDESK. If you have questions about where to count programs, if you are experiencing difficulty correcting the Roll numbers in SAMIS or if there are negative numbers on one of the Rolls, contact your AC or email samis_help@can.salvationarmy.org.samis_help@can.salvationarmy.org

How do I open the.zip file? If you need assistance opening the.zip file visit www.winzip.com. You may need to download the free version if you don’t already have it on your computer. To find out if you already have a program to access the files, browse to the file on your computer, right click – and look at the options available. If you see ‘WinZip -> Extract to here’ use that option. This will open the file, create a folder with the same name as the file, and extract the various documents to the folder. The file contains 8 different word and.pdf files with related information. If this process does not work, you may also get copies of the documents by registering at www.saMinistryResources.ca/signup for the Corps Officer group.www.winzip.comwww.saMinistryResources.ca/signup There’s no time now to engage in Strategic Thinking with all my groups! While the Strategic Thinking is viewed as a critical part of the review process moving forward, it is understood that time is limited this year. Ideally ministry programs and groups will already have set goals and actions, and these can be used as their contribution to the SUMMARY AND GOALS charts. If, however, there are no current goals and actions set, the leadership might consider holding one or two meetings with representation from all ministry programs/groups for the purpose of identifying goals for the coming year. This might involve a brief overview of S.M.A.R.T. goals, and then opportunity for break-out groups to identify their goals. My ROLL numbers in SAMIS are incorrect. The Roll number in SAMIS should match the number of names on each hard copy Roll kept on site. If incorrect information has been entered into SAMIS, or if there has been an error carried forward from the previous year (such as a negative number) it can only be fixed by your AC or personnel at THQ. Address these issues as soon as possible to ensure correct numbers in time for the DHQ visit by contacting the AC or samis_help@can.salvationarmy.org.samis_help@can.salvationarmy.org

What is MOBILIZE? MOBILIZE is the new logo for our Territory which was launched in 2016 to focus The Salvation Army in Canada and Bermuda on the common goals outlined in the 7 Strategic Priorities. For more information read this article on www.salvationist.ca/strategic-priorities.www.salvationist.ca/strategic-priorities What about Roll removals? All removals can be entered into SAMIS before the year end closing date (last day of February) so that the reports generated in SAMIS will be correct, provided that there has been discussion with the AC and verbal/written permission for the removal. During the review visit the AC will be required to sign-off on these removals. If there are necessary changes following the review visit which were not accounted for in SAMIS, the AC will be able to make the necessary corrections following the review.
