Sentence A sentence is a group of words that (a) contains at least one subject and one verb and (b) expresses a complete thought. There are four kinds of sentences in English: simple sentences, compound sentences, complex sentences, and compound-complex sentences.

Simple Sentences were 1. The Star Wars movies were international hits. enjoyed 2. Young people and adults enjoyed them. entertained thrilled 3. The films entertained and thrilled audiences everywhere. battled evil made 4. Luke Skywalker and his friends battled evil and made us laugh at the same time. Compound Sentence A compound sentence has two or more subject- verb combinations. A compound sentence is composed of at least two simple sentences joined by a comma and a coordinating conjunction. A compound sentence has this "formula": disappearedgot The gold disappeared with the mice, so the greedy man got nothing. S V Coord Conj S V

Paragraph A paragraph is a group of related statements that a writer develops about a subject. The first sentence states the specific point, or idea, of the topic. The rest of the sentences in the paragraph support that point.

Paragraph Three parts of paragraph : 1.Topic sentence 2.Supporting sentences 3.Concluding sentences Topic Sentence Concluding Sentences Supporting Sentences

Topic Sentence Express the main theme of each paragraph Best placed at the beginning of the paragraph

Supporting Sentences The aim of the supporting sentences is to develop the topic of your paragraph You should concern with the main theme of your paragraph You should not write too general a sentence

Supporting Sentences Provide an explation/reasons for the idea in the topic sentence. Provide evidence to support the topic sentence Provide examples where appropriate to expand on your claim in the topic sentence

Concluding Sentences This is particularly usefull if your paragraph is long. And you have included a number of examples and supporting evidence.
