3. Early Settlers The colonies first settlers were debtors. Debtors are people put in prison for owing money. They chose carpenters, sawyers, and other craftsmen to build the new colony. The first settlement was Savannah. Settlers arrived in Georgia in 1733 with 120 English settlers.

4. Life In The Colony The battle of Bloody Marsh took place near Fort Frederica on St.Simons Island They bought rice, wheat and flour from settlers in South Carolina. Later, colonists planted peas, corn, squash and rice to feed themselves. The wet coastal area was good for planting rice and Indigo

5. Life In The Colony Trees produced tar for roads and Bike Tires. The settlers farmed and raised cattle, pigs, and horses. At first the leaders of Georgia limited the size of farms and did not allow slavery King George II wanted debtors to settle the lands

7. Work and Trade Georgia’s climate was not right for growing Olives and Grapes, or for raising silk worms. Colonist soon found crops right for Georgia. Wheat, corn, and peas grew well farther inland. Forest Products and livestock were also important.

8. Colony’s Exports Georgia’s agricultural exports were indigo, pork, rice. Georgia’s industrial export was pottery. Georgia’s natural resource exports were clay and lumber. Instead of slaves, colonists used indentured servants.

9. Community and Religion James Oglethorpe let any religion freedom for many colonist. Catholics were not allowed in Georgia. The church of England was Georgia's first religion. Luthererans fleeing from Germany arrived in Georgia in the early 1730’s.

10. Community and Religion Lutherans left there own country because they wanted to be able to practice there religion. The highland Scots were another group to settle in the Americans colonies. They brought their Presbyterian religion with them. Some of the groups came to Georgia.

11. Becoming a State Georgia Became a state in 1733. In 1752 the Trustees gave up their Charter to The British King. The Colony also elected assembly members. At first Georgians' were happy to follow Britain’s Rules, Over time their happiness faded. The King Choose a governor to rule Georgia.

12. Statehood Georgia became a state in 1788. Georgia was the 4th state. The American colony’s called themselves The United states.

13. Important Facts Georgia was called the debatable land. The Spanish attacked Georgia in 1742. The location of the colony was named for King George II of England. Major industries in the Georgia colony are logging and trading. Religious faiths in Georgia were Church of England, French, Huguenot, Jewish, Lutheran, Moravian, Presbyterian.
