Take a break! “It has been said that arguing against globalization is like arguing against the laws of gravity.” - Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations, 1997-2007

Reading Skill: Skimming What is the definition of skimming? Skimming is reading for the general idea or the big picture. What is another basic goal of skimming? - saving reading time - This is a skill you are using in everyday life without even realizing it! Your brain has been trained to skim what you are reading.
14
Reading Skill: Skimming When we skim articles or books, we need to be purposeful in our skimming, doing the things that will help us get the general idea or the big picture. Let’s practice with an article about McDonald’s. First, we’ll watch a short video about the spread of McDonald’s.
15
Skimming Practice Let’s use an article about McDonald’s. Please do not begin reading until I tell you.
16
Skimming Practice: McDonald’s Article First step: What does the title of the article tell us about the general idea? (Will the author present positive or negative opinions about McDonald’s?) Now, read the introduction paragraph completely and stop. (Does the introduction give us what we expected after looking at the title?)
17
Skimming Practice: McDonald’s Article Now, notice the subheadings in the body. How many are there? - Read just the first sentence of all the body paragraphs. - Write in your book or notebook some key words that show 3 or 4 problems with McDonald’s that the author is discussing. (health concerns, loss of culture, poor treatment of workers, not convenient)
18
Skimming Practice: McDonald’s Article Now, read the conclusion paragraph completely. - What does the author suggest as a response to the problems with McDonald’s? (do not support McDonald’s practices, don’t eat there)
19
Globalization Discussion Pros and Cons
20
Read the article, “Pros and Cons of Globalization” In a group of 3 or 4, have each person choose one of the pros or cons to explain to the group. Give an example of that pro or con as you see it in China.
21
