2 Interstate 49 Summary Palms to Pines Presented by
Curt Green, President Gard Wayt Executive Director I-49 International Coalition In 1908 Mayor Martin Behrman from New Orleans, Louisiana USA and Mayor James Henry Ashdown of Winnipeg, Manitoba CA traveled along the Jefferson Highway from New Orleans to Winnipeg and coined the corridor the Palms to Pines. (Map 1) In 1958 the Winnipeg delegation reciprocated with a major stop in Shreveport, Louisiana where the local governments honored Mayor Juba of Winnipeg and Mayor Morrison of New Orleans with a dinner. Both Mayors pledged their support to development of the corridor between their two cities.

Missouri Oklahoma Texas Nebraska Iowa Minnesota South Dakota North Dakota Wisconsin And Canada & Mexico More than just a North Louisiana project more than just a Louisiana project it is a us project with major significance. Impacting many states and three countries.

Impact on the area by NAFTA A Congressionally Designated High Priority Corridor 1 of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) In1991 Inclusion of the project on the list of High Priority Corridors in ISTEA and TEA-21 The Latin American Trade and Transportation Study or LATTS identified this corridor as a priority for meeting future trade needs. Congress designated the corridor as High Priority Corridor I in ISTEA

Provides Economic Development in Underserved Areas Reduces Congestion Improves Transportation Safety Provides for Hurricane Evacuation Supports National Defense Supports National Security Access to nation’s off shore oil production. Commerce – Again LATTS and NAFTA are at play along with all the ports in Louisiana Hurricane evacuation – provide additional outlet for south Louisiana Nation Defense/Homeland Security in connecting 13 DOD Installations including BAFB National Security Strategic Petroleum Reserves and oil and gas production

I-70, I-44, I-40, I-30, I-20, and I-10 Linkages to two or more existing Interstate highways A needed interstate filling the 400 plus mile north / south gap between Dallas, TX and Jackson, MS Flow of international commerce Intersect 6 east west interstates – early interstate development concentrated on east west movements now north south movements need addressed as seen by increase in trade with NAFTA and south and central America Fills and estimated 420 mile average gap
