From The Theatre to Globe In 1598, the lease for The Theatre was running out and Giles Allen refused to renegotiate Over the Christmas holiday, Burbage, Shakespeare and a group of friends dismantled The Theatre board-by-board and took the lumber south across the river Thames where they rebuilt it as The Globe in 1599

Shakespeare’s Theatre Plays took place at 2:00 p.m. because they had no artificial lighting All roles, including females, were played by men. Few special effects and scene changes Audience close to the action A third of the audience stood (couldn’t afford seats) Audiences were loud, rude and cheered or booed as needed Actors were also talented in fencing, dancing, singing Costumes were dress of the day
