Newbery Medal named after British bookseller John Newbery (1713- 1767) Awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children To the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children

The Newbery Award The Newbery Award has been given out each year since 1922. There are Honor books named in addition to the Gold Medal winner.

Criterion #1 “Committee members need to consider the following: – Interpretation of the theme or concept” Excellence in presenting the main idea of the story

Criterion #2 – “Presentation of information including accuracy, clarity, and organization” Excellence in accurate details, a clear storyline, and organization of the story

Criterion #3 – “Development of a plot” Excellence in storyline

Criterion #4 – “Delineation of characters” Excellence in creating characters for the story

Criterion #5 – “Delineation of a setting” Excellence in the choice of the when and where of the story

Criterion #6 – “Appropriateness of style.” Excellence in the style of writing

Criterion #7 “Committee members must consider excellence of presentation for a child audience.” Is it a good story and appropriate for children?

Select “Literary Prizes” out of the Award Winner menu box.

A new drop down menu will appear; find Newbery Medal/Honor from the listing.
