Cellular Respiration Notes
3
Two types of Respiration 1. Anaerobic Cellular Respiration 2. Aerobic Cellular Respiration
4
3 Stages of Cellular Respiration 1. Glycolysis (in Cytoplasm) 2. Kerbs Cycle (Matrix of Mitochondria) 3. Electron Transport Chain (Inner Mitochondrial membrane)
5
Respiration Equation Reverse of photosynthesis C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O+36ATP Glucose made in Photosynthesis
6
Stage 1 Glycolysis Glucose breaking process Glucose 2 PGAL 2 Pyruvic acid -2ATP used +4 ATP made +2 NADH made (similar to NADPH) 2 ATP and 2 NADH gained
7
Glycolysis takes place in the cytoplasm ATP PP ADP ATP = -2
8
P P Glycolysis takes place in the cytoplasm PP NAD + NADH = +2
9
P P Glycolysis takes place in the cytoplasm PP ADP ATP ATP ATP = +2
10
Glycolysis takes place in the cytoplasm P P ADP ATP ATP ATP = +2 Pyruvate
11
What is the net gain of energy in Glycolysis? ATP = + 2 NADH = + 2
12
Glycolysis Where does it take place? What happens? Pyruvate - what is it? What is the net gain of ATP from glycolysis? What happens next?
13
Stage 2 Krebs Cycle If oxygen present AKA Citric Acid Cycle Draw on board
14
The Krebs Cycle takes place in the Mitochondrion NAD + NADH CoA Acetyl CoA
15
The Krebs Cycle takes place in the Mitochondrion CoA Citrate
16
The Krebs Cycle takes place in the Mitochondrion NAD + NADH
17
The Krebs Cycle takes place in the Mitochondrion NAD + NADH
18
The Krebs Cycle takes place in the Mitochondrion P ADP ATP NADHNAD +
19
The Krebs Cycle takes place in the Mitochondrion FADH FADH 2
20
How much energy did the Krebs Cycle produce? NADH = +3 ATP = +1 FADH 2 = +1 But there were two molecules of Acetyl CoA that went into the Krebs Cycle… How many would be produced in this case? +6 +2
21
Where is the energy? So far, most of the usable energy from the original glucose molecule is stored in and Where will most of the ATP be made? The Electron Transport Chain NADHFADH 2
27
Stage 3 Electron Transport Occurs in inner mitochondrial membrane From Krebs Cycle : NADH and FADH 2 A. Has high energy e- which will be passed down e- carriers (protein) embedded in inner membrane B. As e- goes down chain H+ pumped out of matrix C. At end on chain, e- combine w/ O 2 and H+ ion to make H 2 O
29
Oxidative respiration Where does it take place? What is the Krebs cycle? How much ATP is produced from oxidative respiration? What is the total ATP gain from cellular respiration from each glucose?
30
Total Energy Look at pg. 128 1. Glycolysis : ATP 2. Krebs Cycle/ Elect. T. Chain = 30 ATP Total from 1 glucose = 36 ATP
31
Fermentation Harvesting of energy from pyruvate without oxygen present What are two types of fermentation? –Alcoholic –Lactic acid How much ATP is produced from fermentation? –Not much
