Methods of Cancer Treatments Pt.2 OBJECTIVE: Explain how cancer treatments are related to unique attributes and behaviors of cancer cells.

Recap:  How does chemotherapy target cancer?  What does radiation do to cancer cells?  How can surgery be used on cancer cells?

What is a Jigsaw Puzzle?  A bunch of pieces that come together to form a clearer picture.

What does this have to do with class?  You all ready should have read one of the 4 articles.  Each article is a piece of the puzzle.  Cancer treatments still has many missing pieces to it.  So, we are going to try to fill in some more pieces today.

Form a group with everyone who read your article  Discuss your article  Answer the questions about YOUR article ONLY on Jigsaw Worksheet 2.  For example: If you read article 2, answer the questions only on article 2  Make sure EVERYONE in your group understands the article and is an expert on your article.

TIME TO MIX UP THE GROUPS  You now will be assigned to a new group!  Each group will have an EXPERT for each article  Take turns in your group DISCUSSING the articles and answering the all the questions on the worksheet.

Think and Discussion Q’s  Thinking about what you know about how treatments target cancer cells, why is it important to find non-toxic types of cancer treatment, like this one?  Former President Carter had melanoma of the brain and he no longer has any signs of cancer. What are some ways former President Carter could receive a treatment which has not been formally studied for his particular case? Could you get the same treatment?

THINK and DISCUSSION Q’s  For this study of radiation therapy, 900 men were a part of this study and many received the placebo. Would you want to take part in a study like this where you might not actually be receiving the drug?  If you learned you inherited the BRCA mutation, would you consider a mastectomy (Remember: anyone can develop breast cancer, it is just more common in females)?

Discussion  What have you learned about cancer and cancer treatment?  What are some ways that cancer treatments target specific parts of the cancer cell?  How could “designer drugs” and immunotherapies change the way we treat cancer?  Why do we have a variety of cancer treatments?

Why are we learning about cancer treatments?  Information is POWER!  1/3 of people will get cancer in their lifetime.  More than 1.5 million new cases of cancer in 2015 in the USA.  Deaths from all cancers have DECREASED by 22% in the last 20 years.  Tobacco is one of the biggest risk factors  Many cancers such as breast, colon and rectal cancer, cervical, and lung cancer can be detected with regular testing.

REFLECTION  Go to the Wiki page and click on Google Forms to answer reflection questions.  Make sure you are logged in with a Gmail account. 3 Points2 Points1 Point Student explains their understanding of how their ideas of cancer have changed and why there are a variety of cancer treatments. Includes use of vocab words, examples, and thoughtful reflection of gained knowledge. Student explains their understanding of how their ideas of cancer have changed and why there are a variety of cancer treatments. Student answers questions, but lacks explanation of “how” and “why”.

1) Pick a type of cancer treatment, 2) Research it 3) Write a fact about it on the board  Hyperthermia  Stem cell transplant  Photodynamic Therapy  Hormone therapy  Angiogenesis inhibitors  Lacroscopic surgery  Alternative medicine  Small molecule drugs  Monoclonal antibodies  Cancer Vaccines  Pick your own!
