Our Objectives Describe the major areas of a residential landscape. Identify the activities that occur in each of the areas. Explain how to create “rooms” in the outdoor landscape.

What are the major areas of a residential landscape? Similar to the inside of your house, the outside is also divided into “rooms” Each have a different function 3 major areas: 1. Public area- portion of the property seen by those who pass by Usually the front of the home Focal point- draw the attention of the viewer Should lead guests to the front door

What are the major areas of a residential landscape? (cont.) 2. Outdoor living area- where the family spends time outdoors usually located in the back A.k.a private area Pool, fire pit, patio set, etc. 3. Service area- houses items used in the upkeep of the homer ex: mower, ladder, etc.

What happens in each of the main areas of a landscaped residential site? Public area- greet guests Outdoor living area- playground, barbecuing, sunbathing, etc. Service area- place for garbage cans, vegetable garden, etc.

How does one create “rooms” in the outdoor landscape? Outdoor rooms can be created through the use of plant material, fences, and surfacing materials Enclosures- helps to create the feeling of walls, defines a space, be a backdrop for plants, and protect from elements What elements could you use for an enclosure? Outdoor floor- the feeling of entering a different area What elements could use for the floor? Outdoor ceiling- a sense of privacy, protection from weather elements What elements could be used for the ceiling?
