2 Ben Franklin & relation b/t Eng. & US colonies “We have an old mother that peevish is grown; She snubs us like children that scarce walk alone; She forgets we’re grown up & have sense of our own” Eng.-Colonists couldn’t rule themselves

3 A Taxing King Colonists had been ruling themselves for a while The leaders had never been to the colonies “Mongrel Breed”- Mixed breed dog/mutt Mixture of ppl. Some mad at Eng.’s comments-some still considered themselves Eng. Weren’t really English-they were Americans

4 A Taxing King Colonists were different then the Eng. in Europe Colonists went thru hardships to get to America Built homes & farms in thick forests A king couldn’t tell the colonists what to do

5 A Taxing King King wanted to teach the colonists a lesson Imposed taxes & sent soldiers Soldiers were housed & fed by the Americans- bothered & angered Later fought the American Revolution Fight b/t parents & kids How was this a fight b/t parents & kids?

6 A Taxing King King George III wasn’t very smart & not highly educated K.G. III didn’t like that the Parliament had more pwr. than the king Chose gov’t officials that agreed Charles Townshend or “Champagne Charlie” No 1 liked paying taxes Ex. tax on cider (alcoholic)

7 A Taxing King Gov’t was having trouble w/ their budget Needed $ Foreign wars to pay for Gov’t thought the colonists should help pay the bills French & Indian War K.G. didn’t explain well & just demanded the taxes Colonists thought they were going to be made poor Colonists=Nervous & Angry

8 A Taxing King Colonists said-should have the right to vote on their taxes Magna Carta No colonist served in Parliament No voting rights “No taxation w/out representation” King wanted to show he was boss Imposed more taxes Stamp Act (1765) Have to buy a stamp for every printed paper Colonist were mad so they tarred & feathered to some of the stamp agents Stamp act was repealed- too hard to collect

9 A Taxing King Charles Townshend- “Champagne Charlie” taxed glass, lead, paint, paper, & tea Townshend Acts No colonist bought anything from England English merchants=mad All the taxes repealed except tax on tea Taxation w/out representation-tea tax 1773- Colonists dressed up like Indians and dumbed 342 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor Boston Tea Party Lord North- prime minister closed Boston harbor Lord North seen as lazy K. George was sick- disease effected mind/emotions

10 A Taxing King Boston lived on the sea trade No ships could enter or leave & weren’t able to fish Other colonies felt sorry for Boston Never happened B4-The colonies were independent Other colonies were just as mad at the King & North Sent encouragement & supplies CT- Sent $ SC- Sent rice NY- Sent sheep VA- Set aside a day to pray for Boston & they also talked about independence Thought about breaking away & being free- getting rights is not enough
