Energy Notes ? 1-20-12
3
Energy: the ability to do work
4
Work: happens when a force causes an object to move in the direction of the force. Example: If you kick a soccer ball, it moves in the direction of that force
5
Kinetic Energy What is kinetic energy? Energy of motion All moving objects have kinetic energy Examples: walking, running
6
Potential Energy How is potential energy different from kinetic energy? Energy an object has because of its position or shape Examples: standing still, a ball sitting in the grass
7
Potential Energy Or Kinetic Energy?
8
Energy of motion
12
Energy of position (stored energy)
22
Thermal Energy Total energy of the particles that make up an object At higher temperatures, particles move faster Examples: Ice, water, steam
23
Chemical Energy Energy stored in a substance that can be released when the substance reacts. Examples: Burning wood, digesting food
24
Electrical Energy Energy of moving electrons Electrons are negatively charged particles that move back and forth in the wires.
25
As they move energy is transferred to different parts of the appliance. Examples: TV, computer
26
Sound Energy Caused by vibrations in an object Examples: Guitar, radio
27
Light Energy Caused by the vibrations of electrically charged particles. Example: Lamp
28
Nuclear Energy Energy caused by changes in the nucleus of an atom Happens when two or more nuclei join together or when the nucleus splits Examples: Sun, atomic bomb
