Magnetostrictive properties of nanocellulose Terfenol-D film composite for actuation and sensing applications Aleksey Yermakov EMC and Optics Laboratories Mechanical Engineering University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee
2
Background Magnetostriction is strain response of ferromagnetic material to an external magnetic field Inverse magnetostriction (Villari effect) is change in magnetic properties of material in response to applied mechanical stress Response may be optimized via pre-alignment of magnetic domains Cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) subtype of nanocellulose Very low CTE makes CNF viable for electronics applications Low density, high tensile stiffness and strength, high strain to failure for pure CNF films Composite should exhibit better frequency response and tensile strength than monolithic Terfenol-D Composite is potentially applicable in actuation, sensing and vibrational energy harvesting
3
Experimental Methodology Magnetostrictive Response Particle Alignment Villari Effect
4
Results Magnetostrictive Response Particle Alignment Villari Effect No response observed in any samples fabricated so far Multiple ply stacks tested Likely there is not enough magnetostrictive material and/or insufficient stress transfer between matrix and particles Thicker samples with higher Terfenol-D content will be fabricated
