Coral Reefs Lab Part 1: Dry Ice Part 2: Computer Simulation Part 3: Vocabulary/ Lab Report
2
STATION 1—Group # 1-3: Dry Ice Lab Each group should have a beaker, water, penny, pH indicator (bromothymol blue ) Write down the procedures to this part for your lab report individually WHILE conducting the lab
3
STATION 2—Group # 4-6: Computer Simulation Follow the procedures on the lab guide given to you
5
-CO2 from earth’s atmosphere enters the ocean and reacts with water to form H2CO3 -H2CO3 disassociates immediately in water, releasing H+ and bicarbonate ions -bicarbonate ions also disassiociate, releasing additional H+ and forming Carbonate ions -free bicarbonate ions react with Calcium ions in the water, forming calcium bicarbonite -calcium bicarbonite then forms into CALCIUM CARBONITE and carbonic acid and H+ ions as a byproduct REACTIONS CAN GO IN BOTH DIRECTIONS= HELP WITH BUFFERING AGAINST Ph CHANGES
6
STATION 3—Group 7-12: Vocabulary/ Lab Report If you have not completed the other sections, start on the following vocabulary Bicarbonate Carbonate Aragonite Simulation pCO 2 atm Ppm buffer If you completed part 2, start your lab report (should be a combination of all parts)—if you do not have the guidelines please see me!
