The Red Sea The Red Sea separates Arabia and Africa. The Red Sea will one day be an ocean. The Red Sea is called the Red Sea because the volcanic ridge in the center.

Layering Effect There are 5 distinct layers of the ocean they are, Summit zone, Twilight zone, Dark zone, Abyss, and Trenches. Although some sea creatures live in several zones others can only stay in one zone.

Myths and Legends Romans believed Neptune the God of the sea was responsible for the weather of the sea. The Bermuda triangle is 1,500,000 square miles. At least 50 ships and 20 air crafts have vanished without a trace into the Bermuda Triangle.

Vents, Volcanoes, and Mountains If it were possible to soak the ocean water up and expose the ocean floor, you would see volcanoes, and enormous mountains. The weight of the sea is so heavy that only some advanced subs can enter the deep sea without being crushed.

Ocean Weather Oceans help spread the sun’s warmth around the globe. Oceans are responsible for most destructive weather, like hurricanes.
9
Trenches Trenches are the deepest places on Earth up to 13,000 feet below the rest of the sea. They are ice cold and pitch black. There formed when an oceanic plate meets a continent or when 2 oceanic plates converge.

Sea creatures People have killed whales for their meat, bones, and oil. Now whales are protected by treaties and agreements. Turtles have become endangered because their eggs are being eaten by humans and other predators. Giant clams are threatened and many other reef animals.

Christopher Columbus He wanted to sail to India to Spain. Instead of the more common way to the east he arrived in the Caribbean thinking it was Asia. Native Americans there soon became know as Indians because the explorers thought they where in India. His trip paved the way for Europeans to come to the Americas.

Sailors The average salinity of the ocean is about 35 parts per thousand. Back then traveling through the ocean was death-defying due to sailors having poorly equipped ships. Early sailors used the sun and the stars to navigate.
13
Divers There are many different types of professional divers. All of them need to know how the human body reacts underwater. All divers need to get proper certification. Diving is a dangerous sport.
14
Fun facts The pacific ocean covers 32% of the world. A mammal does not stay in one spot after a sperm whale feeds on squid. The highest waves are found in Southern Africa. 10-foot worms can survive in boiling water!
