Red Table – Station 1 Read instructions carefully and then complete the activity.

Review the definitions below Definitions Speed – the distance an object moves divided by the time it takes to move that distance Velocity – the speed and the direction of a moving object Acceleration – a measure of the change in velocity during a period of time

Review the following slides on Speed Velocity and Acceleration

SPEED What is speed? The rate at which someone or something is able to move. Formula: *Units: distance / time

VELOCITY What is velocity? The speed of something in a given direction. SPEED + DIRECTION *If the speed of an object changes, then its velocity also changes. *If the direction in which an object is traveling changes, then its velocity changes. *A change in either speed, direction, or both causes a change in velocity. Formula: *Units: distance / time, direction

ACCELERATION What is acceleration? The rate of change in the velocity of an object. Formula: Acceleration = final velocity – beginning velocity time a = v 2 – v 1 t *Units: distance / time / time or distance / time 2 A positive value shows speeding up. A negative value shows slowing down.

Activity Instructions 1.Take the Blue cards out Ziploc bag. The blue cards are examples of speed, velocity, and acceleration. 2.Sort the cards by speed, velocity, or acceleration and place the cards on the yellow chart under the correct term.

Activity Instructions 1.Take the Green cards out Ziploc bag. The Green cards are examples of speed, velocity, and acceleration. 2.Sort the cards by speed, velocity, or acceleration and place the cards on the yellow chart under the correct term.

Notebook Instructions 1.On page24 of your interactive notebook, divide the page in to 3 equally sized pieces. (See Example) (1 for each term) 2.Define Speed, Velocity and Acceleration (in your own words, do not copy the definition) in the space provided and draw a couple of examples in each section to help illustrate each term. 3.Add Color to the page!

Is there a Distance such as m, km, in, ft? If there is any change in motion such as speed or direction, it is Acceleration Yes Is there a time also such as seconds, minutes, hours? You have a Speed, now check for direction Is there a direction such as North, up, Left? Yes You have a Velocity No Distance with time but without direction is just Speed Yes Start here No Copy the concept map on to page 25 of your interactive notebook
