Used as a spy satellite against other countries ► Cuban Missile Crisis Soviets send nuclear missiles to Cuba, only 90 miles away from Florida ► Apollo 11 lands on moon ► Both countries employ rapid militarization in 1960s

The Fall of Soviet Union ► Mikhail Gorbachev becomes leader of Soviet Union in 1985 Employs Perestroika, restructuring the country to make it more efficient. Employs Glasnost, meaning openness ► Chernobyl ► Reagan and Gorbachev make treaties They agree to remove all intermediate nuclear missiles in Eastern Europe They agree to dismantle all medium and short-range nuclear missiles

The Fall cont. ► Berlin Wall Falls The wall that divided Berlin between East and West fell, and David Hasselhoff was there to sing for them ► Soviet satellite countries gain independence from Soviets and empire ends in 1989

Rise of a New Russia ► Boris Yeltsin first popularly elected president in 1990 ► Relations between USA and Russia continue to grow stronger
