Amazing Arms Race ► USA uses first atomic bomb  Ended WWII when Japan surrendered ► U.S.S.R. uses first atomic bomb in 1949  5 years after USA used its ► Sputnik first satellite to orbit the Earth  Sent up by the Soviets in 1957.  Used as a spy satellite against other countries ► Cuban Missile Crisis  Soviets send nuclear missiles to Cuba, only 90 miles away from Florida ► Apollo 11 lands on moon ► Both countries employ rapid militarization in 1960s

The Fall of Soviet Union ► Mikhail Gorbachev becomes leader of Soviet Union in 1985  Employs Perestroika, restructuring the country to make it more efficient.  Employs Glasnost, meaning openness ► Chernobyl ► Reagan and Gorbachev make treaties  They agree to remove all intermediate nuclear missiles in Eastern Europe  They agree to dismantle all medium and short-range nuclear missiles

7. The Fall cont. ► Berlin Wall Falls  The wall that divided Berlin between East and West fell, and David Hasselhoff was there to sing for them ► Soviet satellite countries gain independence from Soviets and empire ends in 1989

8. Rise of a New Russia ► Boris Yeltsin first popularly elected president in 1990 ► Relations between USA and Russia continue to grow stronger
