4 ABRAHAM LINCOLN *16th president of the USA 1860-1864* Famous for: Preserving the United States Issuing the Emancipation Proclamation Gave the Gettysburg Address Fun Facts: Only president to have a patent He practiced law without a degree Wanted women to be able to vote Was a wrestler, animal lover, and hated being called Abe

5 Mary Todd Lincoln **First lady of the United States (married to Abraham Lincoln)** Fast Facts: Came from a slaveholding family in Kentucky Married Abraham Lincoln in 1842 Gave birth to 4 sons Only 2 survived to adulthood She was sitting next to Lincoln when he was shot in the head and assassinated. She fell into a deep depression afterward and never fully recovered from the event Interesting Facts: Mary was a strong supporter of the Union and abolition despite her background She was not very popular in the White House and very emotional and outspoken at times Some thought she was a Confederate Spy because she spent a lot of money during the war.

7 Ulysses S. Grant **Appointed top Union General the last war of the Civil War** Famous For: -Helping lead the Union to victory **His war plan was to wear down the Confederacy by repeated attacks… it worked!!** Fun Facts: -His real name is Hyrum Ulysses Grant -He eventually became president and afterwards lost ALL his money and turned to Mark Twain for help

8 Clara Barton -**Famous Civil War nurse** -On her own developed the relief/medical plan for treating soldiers in the war Fun Facts: -Originally she was a teacher -She founded the Red Cross -A bullet once grazed her shoulder and killed the soldier she was helping.

9 General George McClellan Famous For: **Temporarily leading the Union Army **Eventually is fired by Abraham Lincoln for not attacking with full force** Fun Fact: -Ran for president against Lincoln -Was well loved by his soldiers, just wasn’t a strong enough commander

10 General William Sherman Famous For: **His “march to the sea” in 1864 where he practiced total warfare** -In this march to the sea he burned everything in his path and broke the Southern morale Fun Facts: -He was nominated to run for president and refused -He died because of standing in the rain at another friend’s funeral

11 Famous Figures in the Confederacy

12 Jefferson Davis Famous for: ***Elected as president of the Confederacy in 1861*** -Was a senator, but resigned when Mississippi seceded -He was a much less effective leader than Lincoln -After the Civil War he refused to make an oath to the Union to regain citizenship

13 General Robert E. Lee **Famous, brilliant West point commander who led the Confederacy** -Very successful until Gettysburg where he was defeated -**He fought to the bitter end and was the general who surrendered at Appomattox Court House** Fun Facts: Lee actually was a part of the Union Army for 8 days until he joined the Confederacy

15 General Stonewall Jackson **Second famous Confederate leader [next to Robert E. Lee]** Considered on of the most gifted tactical commanders in US History -Earned his nickname at the Battle of Bull Run where he stood like a “stone wall” with his men -He was accidentally shot by his own men in 1863 and died 8 days later -This was a major loss to the South and its military

17 Women of the South -Some encourage secession -As men left, they worked in the fields and ran the plantations -Many gave up clothing, money, and other aspects of their life to support the war
