2 What is PLS?   Phi Lambda Sigma is a professional society that recognizes and strives to foster leaders in the profession of pharmacy   It is complementary to Rho Chi, the academic honor society, in that members are chosen by their peers and recognized for their accomplishments

3 PLS History   Phi Lambda Sigma was first organized in March 1965 by Charles Thomas, a pharmacy student at Auburn University   PLS was established believing that leaders needed recognition for their contributions to our profession

4 The Mission of PLS To foster and recognize leaders and support leadership commitment

5 Goals of the Society   Ensure the continuing availability of student and practitioner leaders for the profession of pharmacy   Acknowledge leadership achievement and award membership to leaders recommended by the Society   Enhance the talent, skill, and effectiveness of leaders for the profession of pharmacy   Support and encourage sustained leadership commitment

6 Membership   Membership in Phi Lambda Sigma consists of four categories   Collegiate   Faculty   Alumni   Honorary   All prospective members are nominated on the basis of their demonstration of dedication, service and leadership in the advancement of pharmacy

7 Chapters   Phi Lambda Sigma chapters have been chartered at 103 schools and colleges of pharmacy in the United States and Puerto Rico   The Beta Chi Chapter at the SCCP – MUSC campus was chartered in April 2002

8 Organizational Leadership at the National Level   The National Executive Committee consists of 6 practitioner and 2 student officers   Elected officers   President-elect (a faculty or alumni office)   Member at Large (a student office)   Speaker of the House (a student office)   Elected during the PLS House of Delegates meeting held in conjunction with the APhA Annual Meeting   The National Executive Committee also appoints 8 Regional Liaisons annually

9 Organizational Leadership at the Chapter Level   Chapter Officers   President   Vice President   Secretary   Treasurer   Historian   Faculty Advisor

10 Beta Chi Chapter Activities   Leadership Summit (new in 2012)   Leadership Seminar Series (fall)   Etiquette Dinner (fall)   Annual Leadership Conference (spring)   Annual Initiation and Awards Event (spring)   Annual Meeting (spring)   Mentor Program (new in 2013)

11 Beta Chi Chapter Accomplishments   Ten students elected to national office   2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 (2), 2010, 2012, 2013 (2)   Three alumni member recipients of the National Alumni of the Year Award   2010, 2011, 2012   Three faculty members and one alumni member recipient of the National Leadership Award   2004, 2008, 2010, 2012

12 Beta Chi Chapter Accomplishments   Chapter recognized as Chapter of the Year   2006, 2009   Seven students appointed as regional liaisons   2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009   Advisor recognized as Advisor of the Year (2008)   One student recipient of the Founder’s Award (2008)   Faculty advisor elected to national office (2003)   Chapter recipient of the Leadership Challenge Grant (2003, 2004)   Chapter recipient of the New Chapter Incentive Grant (2003)
