Classification of Matter
3
Learning Goal Today we will determine a solution to be a: Pure substance Homogeneous mixture Heterogeneous mixture
4
My Kool-aid vs your Kool-aid
5
Classification of Matter The composition of a pure substance is the same throughout and does not vary sample to sample. It can be an element or a compound. Mixtures contain more than one substance and vary in composition and properties from sample to sample.
7
Mixture is a blend of 2 or more kinds of matter, each of which retains its own identity and properties. Parts are mixed physically and usually be separated. Ex: salt water vs saline (5% Na) Homogeneous- uniform in composition and contain same proportions of components throughout Heterogeneous- not uniform throughout Filtration or vaporization can be used to separate mixtures
8
Pure Substances A pure substance has a fixed composition and differs from a mixture in the following ways: Every sample has exactly the same characteristic properties. Every sample has exactly he same composition. Pure substances are either compounds or elements A compound can be broken down into more simpler compounds or elements by a chemical change. Example: Glucose is made of C, H, O
9
Practice There are 10 substances set up in stations around the room. In groups you will determine the substance to be: Pure substance Homogeneous mixture Heterogeneous mixture We will rotate every minute 1 minute
