Welcome to the Group!

Where To Today? Debrief Intro & Ch.1 Deconstructing Standards Formative Multiple Choice Questions Breakouts

Let’s Debrief Number off 1-7; group by # Each group has 2 tasks: 1.Pick one of the statements from the Reading Guide to discuss—sharing evidence. 2.Take the corresponding Survival Skill #- Be prepared to share how that skill and the statement you discussed from the guide connect in some meaningful way.

Whereas 95% of jobs in 1900 were low-skilled and required just the ability to follow basic procedures designed by others, today such jobs make up only about 10% of the US Economy. Powerful Learning p1

As a consequence, effective education can no longer be focused on transmission or pieces of information that, once memorized, constitute a stable storehouse of knowledge. Powerful Learning p2

For Next Month Read Chapters 2, 3, and 4 in Global Achievement Gap. Use the reading guides as you do.

Deconstructing Standards

Learning Targets –I can describe the process for deconstructing standards. –I can develop an outline for facilitating this process with others.

Fish Bowl A small group will go through the deconstruction process. Others will only listen. Purpose of listeners: –To listen and observe –To make notes

Debrief Focused on –Process? –Tools and Resources? –How to facilitate? –How to design a professional development around this process?

Questioning

Homework Review…. Design or modify 4 multiple choice questions for your unit of study so that they will give you formative information about the students. These questions do not necessarily have to be only used on the summative exam. Using 2 of the questions, for each answer selection, determine next best steps to help improve student learning.

Let’s Get Some Feedback In groups of 3…. –You will be analyzing each other’s questions-- Is the question clear? Do the distractors provide formative information? Is there only one right answer? –Use post it notes to provide feedback, ask questions, etc. –Once the questions have returned to the author, examine the feedback and ask any clarifying questions to help you improve the questions and/or next steps –Modify Questions

What is the benefit? Of creating questions with formative distractors? Of creating questions that have next steps planned? –When would you want to do this? Of examining others’ questions and providing feedback?
