Unit 12 Review MRS. BUFFINGTON

What’s the difference between biotic and abiotic?.... Abiotic is NONLIVING Biotic is LIVING

What would be the parasite in this situation?

Other parasites

What would be the producer? What would be the primary consumer(s)? What would be the secondary consumer(s)? What would be the tertiary consumer(s)? Deer, Red Squirrel, Deer Mouse, Gypsy Moth Caterpillar Deer Tick, Deer Mouse (again), Fiery Searcher Beetle, Carpenter Ant Blue Jay

Only 10% of energy is transferred from each trophic level to the next…

Trophic Levels

Direct and Indirect When a rabbit is directly receiving energy from the grass it eats, it interacts (or eats) with the grass one on one. When a bear is indirectly receiving energy or competing with something, it does not talk to, compete with, or eat the other animal. The other organism could be a grasshopper. (But the organism a bear eats could eat the grasshopper) Competition among animals could be for food (most likely), water and other resources, or shelter/territory.

Predator and prey relationships. The predator hunts the prey. The prey gets eaten.

Herbivores, Carnivores, Detrivores and Omnivores Herbivores eat only plants Carnivores eat only other animals Detrivores eat only dead things Omnivores eat both plants and animals

How do plants affect the temperature? They lower the temperature by producing Oxygen during photosynthesis. If plants are not present or killed off in a habitat, there would be a surplus of CO 2 in the area. That would cause global warming and a breakdown of the ozone layer in the atmosphere.

When scientists do research and publish their work, it gives out a public awareness about what’s going on in the habitat or environment they are studying. Their research can cause change in the people’s ideas about the environment. It is very important that scientists publish their work. (EX: Rachel Carson who wrote Silent Spring)

Taiga also known as boreal forest or snow forest, is a biome characterized by coniferous forests consisting mostly of pines, spruces and larches. The taiga is the world's largest terrestrial biome. CAN BE EXTREMELY COLD

DISCUSSION QUESTION COMMERCIAL HARVESTING IS THE ACT OF COLLECTING ORGANISMS FOR THE PURPOSE OF SALES (POACHING). HOW CAN COMMERCIAL HARVESTING IMPACT AN ECOSYSTEM? Food chain is disrupted Upper level consumers don’t have anything to eat! Animals like primary consumers and even producers over populate.
