To counter the threat we have added Personal Protective Equipment that when added to their mission-specific equipment like weapons and ammunition easily total 62 pounds. Communications equipment – added in great numbers because of the distributed nature of urban operations – is part of this problem with small unit leaders typically having to carry two or three separate radios to cover their needs. The increasingly technology laden ground forces – burdened with NVGs, GPS, rifle optics, radios, cameras, and phraselators – must now contend with the increased challenge of managing their batteries and carrying spares.
