The Writing Center offers a Paper Review Service. Kaplan University professors will read an entire project and provide useful feedback within 48 hours. HOWEVER, because the WC is staffed with real people who read and critique papers, they sometimes get backlogged and you might not have your paper returned within 48 hours. The reason I mention this is so that you don’t send a paper on Sunday and have it returned on time for you to submit the final copy on Tuesday, the last day of the unit. 12

O N TO SENTENCE REVIEW !! 22

C LASS, WHAT DOES A COMPLETE SENTENCE NEED ? 23

A COMPLETE SENTENCE NEEDS A SUBJECT AND A VERB. 24

C LASS, WHICH OF THESE ARE COMPLETE SENTENCES ? A. I went to the store today. B. After I did the dishes. C. The weather is very nice today. D. Because the rain stopped. 25

T HE COMPLETE SENTENCES ARE A AND C. But look what I can do to fix things: I went to the store today after I did the dishes. The weather is very nice today because the rain stopped. 26

B UT LOOK HOW ELSE I CAN FIX THESE PROBLEM SENTENCES : After I did the dishes, I went to the store today. Because the rain stopped, the weather is very nice today. 27

C HAPTER 4, P. 112 OFFERS SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR IDENTIFYING SENTENCE FRAGMENTS. Here is my suggestion: if a group of words leaves you wanting more information, then it is likely a fragment. 28

O N PAGE 94 OF THE TEXT, THE PHOTO HAS A CAPTION : Helping Mary, Bill, and Stan live their American Dream. 29

C LASS, WHAT QUESTIONS DO YOU HAVE AFTER READING THAT GROUP OF WORDS ? 30

S OME OF MY QUESTIONS ARE W HO ARE THESE PEOPLE ? W HERE DO THEY LIVE ? W HO OR WHAT IS HELPING THEM ? W HAT DOES “ LIVE THEIR A MERICAN DREAM ” MEAN ? 31

N EXT CONCEPT : P UNCTUATION Class, what is the purpose of punctuation? 32

P UNCTUATION Separates We need punctuation to write proper sentences. Punctuation avoids run on sentences and comma splices. 33

C LASS, WHAT ARE EXAMPLES OF PUNCTUATION ? 34

P ERIOD. Q UESTION MARK ? E XCLAMATION POINT ! C OMMA, S EMI - COLON ; C OLON : HYPHEN - D ASH – (A DASH IS MADE BY USING 2 HYPHENS ) T HESE ARE THE ONES WE WILL USE THE MOST. 35

A COMPLETE SENTENCE As we all know, a complete sentence ends with a period. The group of words above, as is this group of words, is a complete sentence and ends with a period. 36

C OMMAS Commas a little problematic in our society. Grammarians don’t always agree where commas should be placed. 37

C OMMAS GIVE US A GREAT DEAL OF TROUBLE IN OUR WRITING, AND IN PART, IT ’ S BECAUSE EVEN THE EXPERTS DON ’ T AGREE ON WHERE TO PLACE THEM ALL OF THE TIME. The word comma comes from the Greek and means “to cut.” We don’t quite cut sentences to pieces when using commas, but they are used as a pause or to separate individual elements. 38

E XAMPLE : I LIKE ROSES AND CARNATIONS. Because only two different flowers are used in that sentence, no commas are needed. We don’t use a comma to separate only two items. 39

E XAMPLE : I LIKE ROSES, CARNATIONS, AND DAISIES. Notice that the sentence has three different flowers and a comma is needed after roses and then carnations. 40

C OMMA S PLICES A comma splice occurs when two complete sentences, or two independent clauses, are joined incorrectly with a comma when a stronger form of punctuation is needed. I went to the store, I went to the library. I went to the store is a complete sentence or independent clause. I went to the library is also a complete sentence or independent clause. 41

Connecting two complete sentences with a comma is incorrect and is called a comma splice. When you have a comma splice, you have several options. The first is to insert a semi-colon in place of the comma: I went to the store; I went to the library. The second is to use a period instead of the comma and make two separate sentences: I went to the store. I went to the library. 42

Y OU CAN ALSO ADD A COORDINATING CONJUNCTION. Coordinating conjunctions are little words that we use to connect or coordinate sentences. There are only 7 of these little words: And, for, nor, or, but, so, yet Class, which one of the coordinating conjunctions could be used to correct the comma splice: I went to the store, I went to the library. 43

I went to the store and I went to the library. 44

Woman without her man is nothing. Class, where and what kinds of punctuation should you add to make this a sensible thought? 45
