4. The Battle Royal This is a chapter from the book Invisible Man. The narrator, and valedictorian of his graduating class, has been asked to give his speech to a group of prominent, white men in the community. 5. Lamb to Slaughter Mary Maloney and her husband, Patrick, seem to be a happy couple. She is a housewife and he is a police detective. On this night, Mary’s evening doesn’t go according to plan: her husband ends up dead, the police are searching her home, a murderer is loose, and then there’s dinner…

6. The Lady or the Tiger A Princess has had an affair with a man not of her social status and her father has discovered this secret. As punishment, the man is sent into the arena with two doors. Behind on door is a beautiful woman for the man to marry, and behind the other door is a starving tiger. The Princess knows what is behind which door. Her boyfriend looks to her while in the arena and she makes a slight but definite gesture to the right, which the young man follows immediately and without hesitation. Which door did she choose?

7. Love in L.A. Jake is daydreaming while in traffic on a busy freeway. Distracted, Jake hits the car in front of him. Mariana gets out of the car Jake hits. Will it be love at first sight?

8. The Story of An Hour A woman with heart problems finds out that her husband and unexpectedly died. She mourns the loss of her husband, but at the same time she begins repeating the word Free! to herself over and over again.

12. Setting: Middle of the ocean on a boat named Orca Camera Angle/Movement: Straight On angle; right to left on shark. Lighting: High Key lighting Sounds: Diegetic: Men talking to one another, water splashing; Non-diegetic: dramatic JAWS theme. What do you want to demonstrate with the above? This is a tense situation; everyone on the boat is at risk due to the shark’s thrashing and sheer size. Land is not in sight. The shark’s size and danger of the situation can be shown w/ the camera angle and a long shot. The music should add to the tension of the situation. Setting: In the cabin of Orca Camera Angle/Movement: Straight On angle, behind Brody Lighting: Neutral Key lighting Sounds: Diegetic: Brody struggling, water splashing; Non- diegetic: dramatic music. What do you want to demonstrate with the above? This is a tense situation; Brody is struggling for his life and we are not sure if he is going to make it. The neutral lighting should make the situation realistic along with the splashing. The music should add more tension for the audience.
