2 The renaissance started with the end of War of the roses (1454-1485) between Lancaster and York. In England you can hear the influence of the Italian Renaissance thanks to the spread of humanism. The english renaissance distinguished by european renaissance for the protestant religion movement,arts snd literature was influenced by the humanism,the students studyed greek and latin. travel increases due to the discovery of America and other new lands. The population and the price of food increased in 16 th century England. The merchant fleet and navy, set up to defend England, expanded trade beyond northern Europe across the Atlantic to the Spanish dominions.

5 Henry VII Henry tudor defeated the last Yorkist, Richard III, in the war of two Roses and became king Henry VII in 1485. He wasn’t a member of royal family,so made a propaganda to support the tudors. Tudor monarchs were concerned with legitimacy and security, any rival of the throne was destroyed. Henry VII restored the reputation of the monarchs as one who rules, not merely reigns. He sponsored the voyage from Bristol of John Cabot in 1497 for to descovery the North American Mainland.

6 Henry VIII Henry VII was succeded by his son Henry VIII. He was a sports man,was very intelligent and received an excellent education infact he was a tipical Renaissance Prince.He was called Golden Prince for his good looks and chivalry. Granted the title “Defensor of fidei” by the pope He was famous for his six wives, he married : Catherine of Aragon,by this marriage borned Mary Tudor.

7 He want to divorce by Catherine,so Henry VIII made a reformation and started a protestant religion. Henry married Anne boleyn and by this marriage borned Elizabeth. After the marriage with anne Boleyn he married Jane Seymour and by this marriage borned Edward. He died in 1547 in London.

8 Edward V I When Henry VIII died in 1547 he was succeded by his son Edward VI.He was very young when became king,he had 9 years old. His uncle, Edward Seymour became Lord Protector. He refused the protastant reformation of his father. He died in 1553 in Greenwich.

9 Mary I Mary I the daughter of Henry VIII was borned in 1516 London. She wanted a son to continue her dynasty, so married the King of Spain Philip II, and Mary became Queen Mary I. She wanted to return to catholicism but the protestan did not want to go back to the old religion and so Mary I burnd a lot of protestants,so earned the nickname “Bloody Mary”.

10 Elizabeth I Elizabet I Tudor was born in Greenwich in 1553 by the marriage between Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. His epoch, called the Elizabethan age, was also a period of extraordinary artistic and cultural flowering: William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, Ben Jonson, Edmund Spenser, Francis Bacon are just a few of the writers and thinkers who lived during his reign. She had a strong personality,she had received an excellent education in fact she was considered much more intelligent of her father Henry, she was anti spahish and anticatholic.

11 She balanced the rival powers of France and Spain, using her possible marriage as a weapon, in fact she never married and so was nicknamed “Virgin Queen”. But the war with Spain was inevitable. The Spanish Armada was defeated by the weather and the superior design of the English ships. Elizabeth during her reign expanded its market overseas with the help of the pirate Sir Walter Raleigh and the captain Francis Drake.She expanded her reign also in India. In England she brought a lot of improvements : Parliament had increased its role in the government because of the laws to create the Reformation. Made obygatory to use the “Book of Common Prayer”. Made the “Act of Supremacy”. She died in 1603 in London.

13 William Shakespeare William Shakespeare was born as Stratford on Avon in April 1564.Her father was a yeoman. He studyed grammar and literature end the language of classical authors. He married Anne Hathaway when he was only eighteen and she was twenty-six and pregnant. In 1584 he left Stratford and went London, but in 1593 the London theatres were closed because of the plague, and Shakespeare needed the support of a private patron. When the theatres reopened, shakespeare became a shareholder and the main playwright of the most succesfull company of actors in London, the Lord Chamberlain’s Men.

14 In 1599 his company built the Globe Theatre, where most of his plays were performed. The great tragedies were written between 1595 and 1605. He died whwn he was 52 years old and was buried in the local church. Shakespeare’s sonnets : the form Shakespeare’s sonnets were published in 1609. The collection includes 154 sonnets. Shakespeare did not use the italian form, he employed three quatrains and a final couplet. The sonnets can be divided into two sections : First section : the poet encourages the young man to marry and preserve his virtues. Second section : the theme are the destructive power of time and moral weakness.

15 The style of the sonnets is characterized by a rich and vivid language. He use the rhyme in the adaption of stress to the movement of emotions. The poet plays with antonyms and homonyms.

17 Text analysis The sonnet is formed by four stanzas Three triplet and one couplet Trhyme scheme: ABAB-CDCD-EFEF-GG Lines 1-8 nature and its law Lines 9-14 art and its symbolic order The theme of this sonnet is the eternal power of poetry and is summarized in lines:13-14 In this sonnet there are a repetitions :line 2 more, line 7 fair. Vivid language.
