JRN 302: Introduction to Graphics and Visual Communication -Intro. to InDesign Thursday, 10-22-15
2
Class Objectives Lecture Intro to InDesign Homework assignments InDesign Tutorial due end of class on Tuesday, 11-3-15 Remember, you have to make sure that the INDD file opens in this lab or else 0 points Look at page 1 on the syllabus for saving files Late work is not accepted, early is Exam 1 is next Tuesday, 10-27-15
3
InDesign, a page layout software Our lab has InDesign CC2015, part of the Creative Cloud Suite New way to buy software = subscription based Gets you to have to renew and not work on old versions ID is not backwards compatible! You HAVE to you export your document to a.IDML file format that can be understood by earlier versions of InDesign. Best practice is, while in our lab, save as both.INDD and.IDML before you leave. Do the same when in another lab.
4
InDesign InDesigned is owned by Adobe Other software leader is Quark XPress Creates printed materials So you’ll use Photoshop to create your raster images and… …InDesign to create the printed designs And link to/point to/place graphics
5
InDesign You will mainly be working with a one page Document when you <File <New A Document is what you might expect; a single- or multi-page document. A Book is made up of those InDesign Documents. So in your case, you'd need to start a New Document. Great for multi-chapter books where each chapter is a section of the book. Once you build or import any graphic or set of graphics into InDesign, you can simply drag that item into a Library for later use
6
InDesign Bleed Guide With a commercial printer, you can print to the edge So you design a bit more than that and at the printer’s, they cut off this “bleed” Our lab printers do not print bleeds or too the edge of the paper Slug- notes area, will not be printed with our lab computers Margins are just suggestions End of paper is black line and drop shadow
7
InDesign… commonly open things Layers- really don’t use these because things are easy to select Link – this is what I use to make sure you’re providing me with the correct files (more about this later) Pages – for multi-paged documents, you’ll have this open Rulers (under <View <Show rulers) – are necessary if you want to pull guides
8
InDesign and PS Graphics You have to <File <Place your graphic InDesign creates a reference link to the file and keeps the actual graphic or image outside of the document So don’t change the location of your image after it’s placed or you’ll have to update it Placing files (on your own) http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-indesign- cs6/working-with-graphics/
9
InDesign and PS Graphics Do not <Copy all (in Photoshop) and then <Paste (in InDesign) Because your resolution may change The image no longer is an original graphic image; it is an InDesign file. If you drag or paste images and graphics into ID, it will embed them directly in the file resulting in a very large document file size Points will be deducted when your newsletter is graded if links in <Window <Links are not correct!!!
10
When in InDesign and looking at your raster images They may APPEAR pixelated (poor quality) on your monitor ID sets this display image at a low resolution to make navigating around the document happen more smoothly. You can change the display settings for all images you place by going to > View > Display Performance > High Quality Display.
11
InDesign and Text We will place graphic files within ID All text should be created within ID using the Text tool Text tool, draw box, type text Double click to get inside the box ESC to get out (or move tool) This is done with frames (on your own) http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-indesign- cs6/working-with-frames/ (12 minutes) http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-indesign- cs6/working-with-frames/
12
InDesign Tutorial Go to Class webpage http://ccfacourses.cmich.edu/jrn/302/kubik/JRN302_homework.html Download all the files for the InDesign tutorial Or copy files off of server Open up the Start.indd file in Indesign Click 1x on the Pages icon in the dock at the right to view the Pages panel. Notice there are multiple pages to this file. Go to <View <Grids and Guides <Show Guides
13
InDesign Tutorial The Tutorial Directions are badly scanned in (sorry) and are for CS4 But they’ll work for CS6 as well When it says “lesson_02 folder”, just look for the file called “Article.doc” When you save and drop your ID file, save it as your lastname.
14
On Your Own tutorials For older versions of ID but still helpful InDesign CS6/ Adobe video tutorials http://tv.adobe.com/show/learn-indesign-cs6/ Book Design, static tutorial that shows tools http://www.designfreebies.org/design- tutorials/indesign-tutorials/basic-indesign-tutorial- in-creating-your-first-book-layout-part-1/ http://www.designfreebies.org/design- tutorials/indesign-tutorials/basic-indesign-tutorial- in-creating-your-first-book-layout-part-1/
