Waste Storage System Closure CNMP Core Curriculum Section 4 — Manure and Wastewater Storage and Handling
2
CNMP Development Core Training Curriculum These course materials have been developed as a cooperative effort between five land-grant universities and The Natural Resources Conservation Service. 3
Objectives Learn the appropriate methods to decommission a manure storage facility.
4
Required Materials NRCS Closure of Waste Impoundment practice standard 360.
5
Waste Storage System Closure Plan Final Application Logistics … Should be prepared in the CNMP planning process
6
Purpose Protect Surface and Groundwater Eliminate Safety Hazards Safeguard Public Health Closure of Waste Impoundments Conservation Practice Standard – Code 360
7
Apply remaining nutrients at agronomic rates Decommission Storage - Breach and backfill - Conversion to freshwater storage All CNMPs should include a Closure Plan
8
For systems that do not store nutrients the closure plan application looks like the annual application plan Apply remaining nutrient at agronomic rates
9
Example CNMP Farm Final Land Application Holding pond fully emptied every 6 months Final land application at closure will follow annual application plan
11
Additional 10,000 ft 3 of sludge to be land applied at closure
12
In-Class Example Calculate the nutrients to be land applied in the 10,000 ft 3 of sludge stored in the bottom of the Example Dairy CNMP holding pond.
13
In-Class Example Estimate Sludge Volume – 10,000 ft 3 Estimate Sludge Nutrient Content –Chapter 4 AWMFH Actual final land application rates should be based on analysis values
14
Estimate Sludge Nutrient Content Using AWMFH Chapter Table 4-7
15
Estimate Sludge Nutrient Content Using AWMFH Chapter Table 4-7: Estimate Dairy Sludge Nutrient Content – N 21 lbs / 1000 gallons – P 9 lbs / 1000 gallons – K 13 lbs / 1000 gallons x 1.2 = K 2 O x 2.29 = P 2 O 5 x 0.4 = PAN
16
Estimate Sludge Nutrient Content Using AWMFH Chapter Table 4-7: Estimate Dairy Sludge Nutrient Content – PAN 8 lbs / 1000 gallons – P 2 O 5 21 lbs / 1000 gallons – K 2 O 16 lbs / 1000 gallons
17
Estimate Sludge Nutrients 10,000 ft 3 = 74,800 gallons Nutrients to apply – PAN 600 lbs – P 2 O 5 1571 lbs – K 2 O 1197 lbs
18
Land Requirements PAN 600 lbs / 150 lbs PAN/acre = 4 acres P 2 O 5 1571 lbs / 65 lbs P 2 O 5 /acre = 24 acres Target Crop (Corn Silage) nutrient needs: 150 lbs/acre PAN & 65 lbs/acre P 2 O 5
19
For systems that store substantial quantities of nutrients (i.e. anaerobic lagoons) the final application closure plan can be very difficult. Apply remaining nutrient at agronomic rates
20
Learning Exercise What if …… The farm utilized an anaerobic lagoon sized to store sludge for 10 years ?
21
Anaerobic Lagoon Example Estimate Sludge Volume – Chapter 10 AWMFH – ASAE D384.1 Standard
22
In-Class Learning Exercise Estimate the land required at closure to land apply stored sludge from a 175 cow dairy (1300 # cows) using an anaerobic lagoon with a 10-year sludge storage time. Assume a target crop requiring 150 lbs/acre PAN & 65 lbs/acre P 2 O 5.
23
Estimate Sludge Volume Using AWMFH Chapter 10 SV = 365 x AU x TS x SAR x T SV = Sludge Volume in ft 3 AU = Number of 1,000 # animal units TS = TS lbs/AU/day SAR = Sludge accumulation ratio in ft 3 / lb TS T = Sludge accumulation time in years
24
TS lbs / AU / day
25
SAR = Sludge accumulation ratio in ft 3 / lb TS
26
In-Class Learning Exercise Estimate the land required at closure to land apply stored sludge from a 175 cow dairy (1300 # cows) using an anaerobic lagoon with a 10-year sludge storage time. Assume a target crop requiring 150 lbs/acre PAN & 65 lbs/acre P 2 O 5.
27
Estimate Sludge Volume Using AWMFH Chapter 10 SV = 365 x AU x TS x SAR x T SV = 365 x 228 x 10 x 0.0729 x 10 SV = 606,674 ft 3 = 4,537,922 gallons
28
Is this a realistic value ?
29
Estimate Sludge Nutrients 606,674 ft 3 = 4,537,922 gallons Nutrients to apply – PAN 36,304 lbs – P 2 O 5 95,298 lbs – K 2 O 70,793 lbs
30
Land Requirements PAN 36,304 lbs / 150 lbs PAN/acre = 242 acres P 2 O 5 95,298 lbs / 65 lbs P 2 O 5 /acre = 1,466 acres
31
How do you clean the sludge out of a waste storage structure ?
32
Breach and backfill Conversion to freshwater storage Decommission Storage
