Our class DEFINITION of CHEMISTRY CHEMISTRY is the study of matter; its CHEMISTRY is the study of matter; its –COMPOSITION –STRUCTURE –and the CHANGES it undergoes.

Why Study Chemistry Anyway? There are many reasons to study CHEMISTRY (or any science for that matter): –t–t–t–to understand and explain the natural world. –t–t–t–to become an informed and responsible citizen. –t–t–t–to prepare for a career.

What Do CHEMISTS Study? Traditionally, the study of CHEMISTRY is divided into FIVE BRANCHES. Traditionally, the study of CHEMISTRY is divided into FIVE BRANCHES. Sometimes branches OVERLAP each other. Sometimes branches OVERLAP each other. 1. ORGANIC CHEMISTRY – the field of chemistry dedicated to studying CARBON BASED COMPOUNDS. -Carbon compounds generally come from ONCE LIVING ORGANISMS.

BIOCHEMISTRY – the field of 4. BIOCHEMISTRY – the field of chemistry that studies CHEMICAL chemistry that studies CHEMICAL PROCESSES in LIVING ORGANISMS. PROCESSES in LIVING ORGANISMS. 5. PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY – the study of the 5. PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY – the study of the MECHANISMS (ways) in which CHEMICAL MECHANISMS (ways) in which CHEMICAL REACTIONS occur and the CHANGES THAT REACTIONS occur and the CHANGES THAT MATERIALS undergo as a result. MATERIALS undergo as a result.
