about Engineering The National Electronics Museum May 16, 2015 Dan Zeitlin

dbz 2015 Careers p - 2 Agenda  What is Engineering?  What Engineers Do  Areas of Engineering  Engineering Jobs  Education  Getting Started  My Career  Consider Engineering

dbz 2015 Careers p - 3 What is Engineering? “Engineering is the practical application of science and math to solve problems” “Engineering is what engineers do” So, what do they actually do?... Engineering is all around us. What is it?

dbz 2015 Careers p - 4 What Do Engineers Do? What do you think? People have different ideas about what engineers do

dbz 2015 Careers p - 5 “I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?” … John F Kennedy  Engineers turn ideas into reality  Make inventions “real”  Engineers solve problems  Current problems & obstacles  Future problems What Do Engineers Do? The application of engineering improves the overall quality of our lives

dbz 2015 Careers p - 6 Engineering Disciplines AUDIO COMMUNICATIONS HUMAN FACTORS HYDRAULIC SUSTAINABILITY ENVIRONMENTAL HIGHWAY ROBOTIC TRAFFIC AGRICULTURAL ARCHITECTURAL CIVIL INDUSTRIAL TRANSPORTATION GEOLOGICAL AND GEOPHYSICAL PETROLEUM MATERIAL MANUFACTURING METALLURGICAL COMPUTER SOFTWARE STRUCTURAL ELECTRIC POWER AEROSPACE MINERAL/ MINING BIO / BIOMEDICAL MARINE/ OCEAN CERAMIC AND MATERIALS CHEMICAL NUCLEAR ELECTRICAL MECHANICAL SYSTEMS Engineers train and work in a myriad of disciplines...and often combine them

dbz 2015 Careers p - 7 Engineering Activities  Research & Development (R&D)  Develop new and needed technologies  Concept Development and Design  Flesh out ideas and figure how to make them happen  Operations & Manufacturing  Plan how and Produce the “product”  Application  Help users to apply, get feedback to improve the product  Logistics and Maintenance  Repair and make parts available to the user  Field Support  Provide product support anywhere anytime Engineering work spans from initial concept to end user support

dbz 2015 Careers p - 8 Engineering Activities Engineering activities flow together during the product cycle Integration & Test Support Concept and Requirements Definition Simulation, Modeling & Prototyping Detailed Design ction Production R&D Logistics Application

dbz 2015 Careers p - 9 Basic Engineering Education  Science The sciences provide an understanding of the “system” we live in and the pieces that make it up.  Physics  Chemistry  Math Math defines how things are and behave. It teaches us logical structured thinking.  Algebra  Geometry and Trigonometry  Calculus Engineers need the tools & skills to understand & solve problems Math is the language of science and engineering

dbz 2015 Careers p - 10  Start now in science programs and hobbies  Electronic kit building  Robotics (Fests & Competitions)  Remotely Piloted Vehicles (SeaPerch)  “Green” projects  Audio-Visual technologies  Amateur Radio (Clubs)  Computers  Software “Apps”  Math programs and challenges  Other STEM programs Engineering Education Hands-on experience is valuable in addition to a formal education

dbz 2015 Careers p - 11 My Career  Amateur (Ham) Radio got me started  Studied Electrical Engineering in College  Part-time electronics work gave me practical experience  Graduated! - Performed jobs ranging from R&D to Field Support  Design engineer, eng’ng manager, technical biz area director  Gained understanding in other engineering disciplines  Did mostly Government projects, but some Commercial ones too –Communications –Undersea and Surface ship systems –Ground-based systems –Airborne systems –Space systems –Smart Transportation  Received enjoyment and satisfaction, got to travel worldwide  Trying to pass it forward now My career has been a continuous learning experience... I continue using my skills to help and to learn

dbz 2015 Careers p - 12 AAll engineers share some common foundation skills TThey think in a structured and logical way TThey understand how to learn new things TThey solve problems TThose skills prepare engineers to learn to do most anything AAn engineering education gives you great career flexibility TT he pay “ain’t bad” either MMean starting salary of $64K in 2014 ($60-$100K range)* Year after year, engineering tops the list of majors with the highest avg starting salary Engineers are a little like US Marines... “Once an engineer, always an engineer” Consider Engineering An engineering education paves the way to almost any career *April 2014 Salary Survey, National Association of Colleges and Employers. All data are for bachelor’s degree graduates.
