It raises the key issue for the Workshop: How do we express our hidden, secret feelings—and should we express them at all?

4 Reading 1 Anchor The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Based on the classic short story by Robert Louis Stevenson in Read 180. Tells the tale of a respected British doctor who gives in to his fascination with the dark side of life.

5 Reading Anchor 2 “Shadow Watcher” A poem by Tim Sebles that explores the feelings of a character who claims to see the horrible things that lie beneath the surface of life. The poem includes reference to vampires, which are Gothic creatures.

6 Video Story Vampire Mania The character of Count Dracula has been a well- known figure in popular culture since 1897, when Bram Stoker created him in his novel Dracula. This video focuses on people’s ongoing fascination with vampires like Dracula. It covers the traits that have been associated with vampires over the years and discusses how the character of the vampire has changed. The video also touches upon several fictional versions of the vampire story including Stephenie Meyer’s Twlight book series.

21 Strategy Note Social Studies Connection The 1800s were a time of growth for London, England. Its population grew from about one million to seven million, making it the world’s largest city. Many buildings and railroads were built. This rapid growth caused some problems as London became overcrowded and dirty.
