Empower Learning from others about Collaboration… Assessed beginning of the year student writing samples using September Clay Writes 4 th grade writing teachers met weekly to discuss writing skills students needed to improve and planned writing lessons. Teachers taught the same lessons to keep pace with each other. Creativity was sparked in both students and teachers We always had someone to rely on

Introduce a topic clearly, state an opinion, and create a organizational structure in which related ideas are grouped to support the writer’s purpose. b. Provide reasons that are supported by fact and details. c. Link opinion and reasons using words and phrases (e.g. for instance, in order to, in addition). d. Provide a concluding statement or section related to the opinion presented.

Innovate. Engage. Empower FS Writing Assessment… The stimulus will be presented along with a writing prompt that asks students to write an essay about the topic. The students will be required to synthesize information from the text sets and must cite specific evidence from the texts to support their ideas.

Innovate. Engage. Empower Unpacking the Rubric Examine the Rubric, focusing on the highest point total, not the minimum requirements. What do you notice?

Innovate. Engage. Empower “Norming” is Normal… Each person reads and assigns the sample a score. Each person shares their score with the group. The group records the scores on chart paper so readers see score discrepancies. Readers explain their rationale for their scores starting with discrepancies. Decide on score that everyone is comfortable with.

Innovate. Engage. Empower Let’s Try It… Read through the passages, the prompt, and the student response. INDIVIDUALLY, rate the 1 st student response by giving a score for each section of the rubric. Provide written rationale for your score.

Innovate. Engage. Empower Where are we collectively? Take the dots in the center of your table. Each person needs 4 dots. Place a dot on the number that represents your score for each section. Place a dot on the overall number that you rated the student paper.

Place a dot on the number that represents your score for each section. Place a dot on the overall number that you rated the student paper.

Innovate. Engage. Empower Partner Up… Choose one of your student papers. Score it and provide rationale for your score. Trade student papers with a partner. Do not share your score of the paper with your partner. Score partner’s paper. Discuss scores given and rationale. Come to consensus on a final score.
