2 Nationalism Intense national pride leads to rivalries: Russia saw it self the leader of all Serbian nations, Germany saw itself as the leader of all German speaking nations. Economic,political, military competition Feelings of Racial superiority Intense national pride leads to rivalries.

3 Imperialism Scramble for Africa- European countries fighting for control of countries in Africa Competition for colonies in Asia, Latin America, middle East and southern Europe The more colonies you had the more rich and powerful you were. Great Britain and France had the most colonies.

4 Militarism The use of new weapons of war such as submarines, airplanes, machine guns, artillery, tanks and grenades

5 Alliances Central Powers were Austria, Germany and Italy, Turkey and Bulgaria Allies, was Great Britain, France and Russia later Italy joined them. Belgium, Spain and Switzerland wanted neutrality The idea was that if one country gets attacked the rest had to join the fight.

6 Powder Keg of Europe Russia wanted to control the Balkans. Bosnian Serbs wanted independence from Austria Serbia wanted to annex Bosnia Austria wanted to crush Serbian Influence in Bosnia End of the Franco Prussia war Germany took Alsace-Lorraine from France which lead to Great trouble between the two countries

7 Behind the Scenes France was still bitter over the loss of Alsace- Lorraine. Great Britain sees Germany as both an economic and military threat. Russia wants access to the Mediterranean through Turkey. Russian wants more influence in the Balkans.

8 The Trigger Event Killing of Arch-Duke Franz Ferdinand The first world war began in August 1914. It was directly triggered by the assassination of the Austrian archduke, Franz Ferdinand and his wife, on 28th June 1914 Result: 1. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. 2 Russia got involved to defend Serbia. 3. Germany seeing Russia mobilizing, declared war on Russia. 4 France was then drawn in against Germany and Austria- Hungary. Germany attacked France through Belgium pulling Britain into war. Then Japan entered the war. Later, Italy and the United States would enter on the side of the allies.

10 Anti – War or Isolationism USA remained untouched by the war President Woodrow Wilson saw it as a European problem.

11 USA Benefits USA not involved with the fighting but made lots of technologies for the war affected countries. USA made money from sales to war torn countries. Early in the war the USA traded with both sides but was soon forced to take sides.

12 Large War loans By 1917 USA made large loans to France and Great Britain over $2M Midwest banks loan $27M to Germany Large growing sympathy towards the British and French in the USA. They were seen as fellow democratic countries and many Americans has close family ties with Great Britain

13 Submarine Warfare The sinking of the Lusitania that Killed 120 Americans caused a great deal of anger in the USA towards Germany. German U-boats also started sinking American Vessels which carried supplies to Britain. This brought the USA into war. In 1917 the USA declared war on Germany

14 Zimmerman Telegram In 1917 the British intercepted a telegram from Germany to Mexico called the Zimmerman telegram. Germany wanted Mexico to attack the USA and Germany would return, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona to Mexico. 2 April 1917 USA entered WW1

15 Effects of USA involvement USA arrival in the war was a moral boost for the Allies. 2.8 Million men were drafted including 400,000African Americans It was the first war in which woman officially served in the armed forces Allies won the war in 1918 when Germany signed an armistice on 11/11 1918

17 Creating New Military Bases Thousands of Georgians joined the war 3000 died The draft proved controversial, people like Tom Watson and Rebecca Felton criticized the draft. New bases such as Fort McPherson(Atlanta), Fort Gordon(Augusta) and Camp Benning(Columbus) was opened in 1917 and trained infantry soldiers The bases also became a prison for prisoners of war

18 War time Production or Total War Textile Factories – made uniforms for the soldiers. Railroads carried arms and ammunition Farmers grew crops such as tobacco, food crops and livestock. Southern ports were used to export soldiers and equipment to Europe

19 Personal Contributions Many families built victory gardens in which they could grow vegetables for the military.

20 WAR BONDS Many people sold War Bonds to pay for the war expenses.

21 RED CROSS Many women volunteered to work for the Red Cross

22 ARMISTICE DAY Between 80 000- 100 000 Georgians served in the war. +_3000 died and was wounded in the war. After the war Georgians Georgians still celebrated Armistice day Nov 11, 1918(an agreement to stop fighting) by ringing church bells in remembrance of those who died.
