Warm Up1-14-16 1.Which direction did the water spread out more on your newspaper? 2.Which direction was straighter when ripping the paper? 3.Describe energy Agenda Lawson Test of Reasoning Demo hands warmer Notes Unit 4 day 1 Turn in newspaper lab Homework

Lawson Test of Reasoning This short quiz is to help us know what kind of problem solver you are (doesn’t count for a grade) Do not write on the booklet Bubble in your answers on the scantron Work on your lab if you are done early

Exploration Activity Describe your object before activation How did you activate it How does it feel when the reaction occur Draw a picture to explain the reaction and how it occurs

Unit 6 - 1 Energy as Heat (Thermodynamics)

Unit 6 - 1 Heat Energy Energy – the ability to do work or move an object (has different forms) Example: -Thermo (Heat) -Electrical -Mechanical -Nuclear -Chemical

Changes in Matter Heat - A transfer of energy between two substances due to temperature differences. (thermal energy) Going one phase to another phase involves energy transfer.

Changes in Matter Green=exothermic Blue=endothermic

Heat Transfer System: The process you are focusing on. Surroundings: Everything outside the system (for example, containers, your body, a thermometer, the atmosphere). -Heat transfer occurs between the system and the surroundings.

Heat Transfer Exothermic - When heat is transferred from the system to the surroundings (energy exits) feels hot (usually) Endothermic When heat is transferred from the surroundings to the system (energy enters) feels cold (usually)

Check-in You started a reaction and the surrounding temperature was 25 °C, after an hour the temperature decreases to 15 °C. 1. Is the process exothermic or endothermic? 2. Heat transferred from the solution to the surroundings. True or false.

Check-in 3. Boiling water is a ___thermic reaction? 4. Melting ice is a ____thermic reaction?

Thermodynamics Law of Conservation of Energy 1 st law of thermodynamics energy can only be transfer not created or destroyed 2 nd law of thermodynamics Heat always flows from warmer objects to colder objects

Assignments -Turn in newspaper lab if finished, if not = homework due Friday -Notes summary I’ll sign next class
